Chisoxfn Posted April 20, 2003 Share Posted April 20, 2003 Minor League Recaps By Mike Doyle April 20, 2003 SoxNet.net Behind solid performance by Jon Rauch (2-0), Mike Porzio (3-0), and OF Cliff Brumbaugh, the Knights took both games of a doubleheader against the Indianapolis Indians, 9-3 and 5-0. In game one, Jon Rauch pitched six solid innings, yielding two runs while striking out six Indian batters. Rauch has pitched well in all three of his starts, compiling a 2.00 ERA so far. Willie Harris continued his hitting tear, going 2 for 3 with a home run and three batted in. Currently, Willie is batting a robust .404 on the year. Second baseman Aaron Miles also contributed to the Knights offensive barrage, hitting two doubles and batting in two runs. Mario Valenzuela launched his third homerun of the year in the 8th as well. In game two of the doubleheader, LHP Mike Porzio continued his unexpected success, pitching six solid innings while striking out eight Indian batters. Porzio has won all three of his starts, and his ERA is under 2. Outfielder Cliff Brumbaugh was the main source of offensive firepower in game two for the Knights, going 3 for 3 with two home runs and three driven in. Willie Harris continued on his success from game one, going one for three with his first triple of the year. Jon Adkins (1-2) will take the mound for the Knights tonight in game three of the series. Indian starter Francisco Campos (0-2) will oppose Adkins. The Birmingham Barons continued their spiral downward, as Corwin Malone (1-1) was lit up yet again in a 6-1 loss to Huntsville. Corwin Malone seemed to have improved his control against the Huntsville Stars, only walking three in 4 1/3 innings, but was nailed for nine hits and four earned runs. The only highlight for the Barons pitching was Royce Ring, who struck out two in his one inning pitched. Ring’s ERA now stands at a miniscule 1.13. Once again, the Barons offense sputtered, collecting a mere five hits on the night. The only run for the Barons came in the 9th, when DH Darron Ingram hit his first homerun of the year. Hopefully things will get better tonight, when Barons starter Brian West (0-1) will oppose Derek Lee (2-0). Kris Honel (2-1) had a surprising sub-par outing, but Ryan Wing (3-0) and OF Daylan Holt salvaged a split of a doubleheader against Frederick. Kris Honel had his first bad outing of the year, going only four innings and giving up five earned runs. Honel only struck out two on the night. Kris McWhirter kept the Hogs close, pitching three strong innings out of the bullpen. The Hogs made a valiant comeback in the 9th, as Daylan Holt launched a massive three run, pinch-hit homerun. Unfortunately, the Hogs could not get another run, and they fell in the first game 5-4. Speedster Ruddy Yan went 1 for 4 for the Hogs, but picked up his 10th stolen base in 11 games. Yan is second in the Carolina league in stolen bases, and fourth in batting. Game two was a different story, as LHP Ryan Wing pitched six more spectacular innings to pick up the win. Wing gave up four hits and a walk in his six innings, striking out six. Wing actually raised his ERA in this his third start of the year, giving up his first earned run of the year. After the game, Wing was named the Carolina League’s pitcher of the week. From all the minor league writers here at SoxNet, a big congratulation goes out to Ryan Wing on his stellar performance so far. Wing did not need much offensive help, but he got six runs worth. Daylan Holt hit another three run homerun, raising his slugging percentage to an even 1.000 in Winston-Salem. Ruddy Yan picked up another stolen base, his 11th in 12 games. Frank Francisco (1-0) will go for the Hogs, opposing Frederick starter Ben Knapp (0-2). Kannapolis continued its hot streak, taking both games of a doubleheader against the Lakewood BlueClaws, 5-3 and 2-1. In game one, the Intimidators rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to get the win for starter Paulino Reynoso (2-0). Reynoso did not pitch great, but pitched well enough to salvage a win in his five innings of work. Josh Rupe continued his outstanding season as a closer, picking up his third save and keeping his ERA at zero. Outfielder Thomas Brice got the Intimidators on the board in the 2nd, with a triple that scored two runs. The Intimidators took the lead for good when Andy Gonzalez singled home a run, and first baseman Julio Reyes doubled home a run of his own. Anthony Webster led the Intimidator attack in game two, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and run scored. Catcher Charles Lisk has appeared to come out of his slump, going 2 for 3 as well. The main story of game two though, was starter Brian Miller (2-1). Miller pitched five outstanding innings, only giving up one earned run on two hits and a walk. Rick Hummel, brother of Charlotte infielder Tim Hummel, pitched a scoreless 9th for his second save of the year. Kannapolis has the day off today. Note: Yesterday in the 4/18/03 minor league recap, I stated that Jon Rauch was 2-0, and going for his third win. At the time the article was put up, Rauch was only 1-0. I apologize for the error. I think last year he was in the .270-.280 range. He seems to have a good eye for his age and is working more and more on bunting and hitting grounders/line drives. He can really fly and I think the key is that he seems to already realize that he can't hit the ball in the air. This guy has Luis Castillo potential.
