Zaun update thread

Just so people know, giving oxygen to a player in that situation is a common practice. If there was a neck injury suffered by Zaun, the personnel on the field took way too long getting him immobilized and into the ambulance. High dose steroids needs to be given as soon as possible in severe situations. Hopefully, it's just a concussion (even though that's bad enough).

I just read the little blurb about it on the recap.  What happened?  It doesn't sound intentional at all... ???

:pray for Zahn.

It was intentional on Zaun's part. He didn't intend to get injured, but it was Zaun's intent to use his body to break up a double play. That his head collided with Pedro's knee was acidental, but Zaun was looking for contact on the play.

Per ESPN 1000: Gregg Zaun is going to be observed overnight at a hospital in Toronto. He has an undetermined head injury. Zaun was choking after the blow to the head by Pedro Lopez's knee so they gave him oxygen on the field.

I hope he's okay. :pray

Paul Konerko and other Chicago players, who were huddled around him, said Zaun was having trouble breathing.

"It was scary," Konerko said. "He was choking on something. That's what everyone standing out there was a little bit worried about. It's one thing to get knocked out, you get knocked out and you come to, but he was lifeless and it sounded like he was choking on something. He was gasping for air but lifeless at the same time.

"It was getting to the point where 10, 15, 20 seconds into it, you're wondering if this guy is going to choke to death right here," he said.

My prayers go out to him and his family. Hopefully he gets better quickly. Stuff like this just puts it into perspective for you. While we all are hardcore fans there are a hell of a lot more important things than baseball like family and safety. Get well soon Gregg.

per rotoworld:

Gregg Zaun - C - Blue Jays

Blue Jays placed catcher Gregg Zaun on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion.

Zaun will be released from the hospital tomorrow and the Jays should have an update on his condition then. Ken Huckaby will take over as Toronto's primary catcher for now, but he's such an easy out that he should remain a weak option in AL-only leagues. May. 8 - 10:44 pm et

looks like he'll be ok! get well soon!

While he was on the field he was moving all of the extremities and alert. The board and collar were precautionary and routine. The extent of the concussion is the key.

In a situation that involves back/neck/spine type injuries you ALWAYS overreact. If there is a broken bone in the spine, one wrong move can result in paralysis. They did exactly what they were supposed to do there.
