rangercal
How screwed would we be if we did get that deal done? Lets say we traded Garland and Pk for Johnson, and didn't sign El duque. Would we still be 24-7?
DBAHO
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Don't forget Brian Anderson or Ryan Sweney either.
NUKE_CLEVELAND
QUOTE(rangercal @ May 8, 2005 -> 11:42 PM) How screwed would we be if we did get that deal done? Lets say we traded Garland and Pk for Johnson, and didn't sign El duque. Would we still be 24-7? I was against that deal from the first I heard of it. Very publically and very vocally on here. I feel vindicated by the events since then.

Even though many sox fans wanted it. I think we would be around .500 and everyone would be calling for kw's head.

DBAHO
Going along with the whole who was on Jon Garland's side thread from a week back, here's a perfect case of seeing what would have happened if we gave up on Jon too soon. Now RJ is one hell of a pitcher no doubt. But he wouldn't have JG's numbers right now, and you take out a Konerko plus a prospect like Anderson, it would have hurt us in the short and long - term. But if we make the playoffs, it'll be interesting to see if a pitcher like RJ could have put us over the top in a playoff series. That was the whole reason FOR gettin him IIRC. Sometimes the best deals are the ones a GM doesn't make. The Johnson deal and the Mulder deal are exhibits A and B.
The Critic
QUOTE(rangercal @ May 9, 2005 -> 12:11 AM) I guess that's why we picked up El Duque. I would feel good with him pitching a game 1 for us. I think Mark or Freddy would be a little too anxious. While I like the idea of Duke throwing Game 1, should it come to pass, I would feel equally confident in Mark pitching any game of any series. I don't see him getting jittery. He's grown into a mature, confident, calm professional.
Jordan4life_2007
It sure looks foolish now. I never ever wanted to make that deal. Not for somebody who's 40, even Randy Johnson.
Spiff
The Yankees' compulsion to have to outdo everyone, especially Boston, has really hurt them lately. Contreras was terrible there; getting A-Rod from Texas meant that Boston kept Ramirez (WS MVP) and Nomar, and they eventually parlayed him into a deal for Cabrera and Mientkiwicz. Overpaying for Jaret Wright was stupid, signing Giambi has turned out horribly, and now they are old and slow.

Flash Tizzle
I'm completely forget about this preseason fiasco. Any trade scenario in which four players (two major league contributers, two prospects; possibly higher tier) are traded for one player, even if that person is Randy Johnson, is terrible managing. I'm glad Williams avoided Arizona's ridiculous demands. Ultimately, both teams are better now because of their respective moves, so no harm is done. Now, let's all reflect on this thread and laugh at those who supported a RJ trade. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...%20johnson&st=
Gene Honda Civic
I just read my quotes in that thread, remembering that I was pro-Johnson. I stated, however, that we had to do everything in our power to NOT give up Jon Garland in the deal.
RockRaines
I think that addisonstsox had a really great post in that thread which tells why this would have been a bad deal. Its almost Prophetic. Garland is the best 5th starter in the game, Anderson is thriving in the minors, and we got much more not doing the trade. Pretty good moves by KW. Not to mention I was completely wrong about the RJ trade.
