Still, it's crazy...

welcome to the new world.

I don't think this would have played out any different pre 9/11. Not over the WH anyway. JMO...

They would not have cleared out all of these buildings in a heartbeat like they just did, that's for sure. Plus many of the restricted areas that exsist now, didn't exsist pre9-11.

As a matter of a fact they are interviewing a congressman now, who had come over his blackberry to evacuate all buildings immediately.

Point taken.  I was referring to the fighters being scrambled.

I agree with you there for sure.

Private planes over the White House, and I am assuming it was that close I have no idea, have many times over the years found themselves military escorts in a matter of seconds within crossing the restricted zone.

I'd say that's a reasonable assumption.

U.S. Capitol, White House briefly evacuated

FAA tracking unidentified aircraft

Wednesday, May 11, 2005 Posted: 12:21 PM EDT (1621 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A security alert prompted the evacuation of parts of the White House and U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

"Run, this is no joke, leave the grounds," a U.S. Secret Service agent told CNN White House Correspondent Suzanne Malveaux. An all-clear announcement was issued a few minutes later. No other details of the evacuation were immediately available.

Two F-16 aircraft were spotted in the air above the Washington area.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to CNN it was tracking an unidentified aircraft that has apparently violated airspace over the White House.

Malveaux said a motorcade of six or seven cars left the White House. It's not known if President Bush has left the residence. CNN Congressional Correspondent Joe Johns said members of the Senate were evacuated from the Senate floor while it was in session.

I'm hearing a Fox reporter criticizing what happened because she didn't know what was going on ... "There was a lot of confusion." ... Yet, I'm also hearing the evacuation took place "post haste". Apparently this reporter thinks they should have stopped and filled her in. :rolly

Every person that WBBM interviewed had a completely different story. The message was very clear. Evacuate immediately. If that is the case, how much explanation do you need if they feel it is something that has to be done NOW????

I hate reporters.

CNN claims they didn't know if the Prez was evacuated.. ABC claims he isn't even in Washington.. :banghead

MSNBC reports he was out on a bike ride in the surrounding suburbs when it happened and was then rushed to an underground bunker.

The VP was escorted out of the area with his motorcade.

Oh my goodness.  DC has anti-air craft guns and were prepared to use them if necessary; say, if this plane was supposed to go down in a crowded area.

Good grief..

They just need to construct a bubble or something over important buildings. Or maybe they can put big signs in the sky... "Sky closed ahead..."

As opposed to it plowing into Congress and killing off an entire branch of our government? Its not a happy choice, but it is the only choice if it comes to that.

Get out!? :P

That said, wanting to shoot down a single-engine Cesna because some greenhorn doesn't know what he's doing?

Yikes.
