So do not be surprised to see MLB turn East for answers. The Padres, for one team, are not hesitating. Two of their top executives, Randy Smith and Fred Uhlman, were in Japan last week to see Seibu Lion ace Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is possibly Japan's best pitcher and likely to be posted after the season. Chiba Lotte ace Naoyuki Shimizu, Hanshin starter Kei Igawa and Yakult lefty reliever Hirotoshi Ishii are also pitchers who may try to come to the U.S. next year and have drawn interest of the Padres and others. That is some good news. Hopefully we may be able to get him for a discount, like we did for Iguchi. But really for this to happen, we'll have to move one of our starters, most likely Contreras. And then B-Mac is going to have to wait for another season, unless the Sox decide to move him into long relief like Neal Cotts to give him experience at the major league level.
