Bringing back Frank to pinch hit wouldn't be a complete waste but it may be better for him to get more at bats with the Knights and run and his ankle some more. I doubt he will every be playing 1st base for us this season or maybe ever again. It's just not worth the risk. He will be eligible to come back on June 6th after his 20 days of rehab but we will be at the start of two away interleague series at Colorado and San Diego. Not that Thomas was worried about that, or about experiencing any pain walking, running or doing anything baseball-related. "I have to stop worrying about it and just move forward," he said Wednesday night after going 1-for-5 with a single and two strikeouts in his second appearance with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. The only pain in Thomas' debut Tuesday was in watching him lumber around the bases. Thomas did far more running than he expected in his 2-for-3 opener. So much running, in fact, that he opted out of his last at-bat in the ninth inning. He didn't have that problem Wednesday, being lifted for a pinch-runner after singling in the ninth. The important thing for Thomas and the Sox was he was in the lineup on consecutive days and felt fine. "Tonight was good," he said. "I got to see some pitches. Guys mixed it up well. The first at-bat I got to do what I wanted to do—drive the ball to right field and move the guys over. That's what we're doing in Chicago now." Thomas said his halting performance on the bases Tuesday was partly because he didn't want to push himself too much too soon and he was wearing shoes that are a half-size too big. Thomas normally wears a size 14, but the brace he wears on his left ankle requires a shoe a half-size bigger. Nike, the brand Thomas wears, doesn't make half-sizes that large—until now, at least—forcing Thomas to go to a size 15. Thomas will be getting a proper size shoe, but it takes about a month for it to be made. Thomas predicted some at-bats would be ugly. And those came Wednesday night, when he had two strikeouts—one looking, another swinging—against left-hander Brian McNichol. "You need some failure along the way here, so that was good," Thomas said. "Twice I got out of an at-bat and didn't think about running. It was more instinctive. That's how I want to feel. Hopefully it will continue where that instinct will kick in and I'll have that burst again." The loudest, most insufferable heckler was at the game last night sitting only a few seats from me. Right next to the Sox dugout. I was praying someone would shank a foul ball off his coconut. He was removed by security around the 5th or 6th. Apparently he used to do the same thing at Expo games. Frank laughed at his antics and talked to him a little. He had some of the guys shaking their head. He had a decent percentage of the crowd laughing at what he was saying. Unfortunately, after he was removed, a few drunk college-aged kiddies thought it would be cool to follow in his unrelenting, arrogant footsteps. They were especially rough on Borchard for his "5.3" and sub .200 average. Once Joe picked up a foul ball and they gave him a standing ovation. Needless to say this all started after Joe hit his 400+ foot home run. And Raul Casanova took a lot of crap, simply because his name can easily be screamed in howling, wolflike manner. Robert Person appears to be pitching ok but there have been a few dribblers, etc. Greg Norton and Trace Coquillette just screwed up a grounder to the right side, it went into RF for a base hit, 2 runs scored. 4-2 for Ottawa, end of 3rd inning. Person has walked 4 guys plus one intentional walk. He just walked the leadoff guy and Raul Casanova pegged him out trying to steal. Person described as erratic tonite in terms of control. I'll say.
