Thomas hits grand slam -- only to have it taken away

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — You can take it off the board ...

Frank Thomas, who is playing with Triple-A Charlotte as part of a rehab assignment, appeared to hit a grand slam in the seventh inning of the Knights' game Thursday night against Indianapolis. But the umpires reversed the call after the ejections of Indians pitcher Jeff Miller and catcher Ryan Doumit.

Thomas then grounded into a double play as part of an 0-for-4 night.

During his rehab Thomas is hitting .182 (6-for-33) with one RBI.

Jamie Burke had a home run and three RBI as Charlotte beat Indianapolis 11-3.

This seemed like strage occurance and I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what happened. Any clue?

What in the hell. What does a few of the opponents pitchers getting ejected have to do with Thomas hitting a homer. Did they somehow intend to eject him before he threw the pitch and than when Thomas hit it they were like, no that doesn't count, the pitcher should of already been ejected?? LOL

This is definately something I want to hear about. My email is down but I'm gonna ask as soon as I get a shot.

Thomas loses slam, Indians lose game

FORT MILL, S.C. -- White Sox slugger Frank Thomas, on a rehabilitation assignment with Chicago's Triple-A club, thought he had a grand slam Thursday night in Charlotte's 11-3 win over the Indianapolis Indians.

But the umpires reversed the seventh-inning call, saying it was a foul ball, after Indians pitcher Jeff Miller and catcher Ryan Doumit argued and were ejected. Thomas then grounded into a double play as part of an 0-for-4 night.

Jamie Burke hit a home run and drove in three runs to lead the Knights in the International League game. His double scored the first run for the Knights and his two-run homer in the sixth put Charlotte ahead 5-3.

I don't think you can say that without actually seeing it.

The Charlotte manager said it was clearly foul and the home plate umpire botched the call. When the opponet protested, they talked to the crew chief and the other umpires and reversed the call. The Knight's manager wasn't even upset about the reversal because he knew how badly they call was botched.

Naturally, I actually heard this come out of his mouth on the Carmen and Silvy show, but, what do I know.

While ejecting the players that were "right"?

There's protesting, and then there's using profanities, getting personal, etc.

Obviously, these players crossed the line, as they were, in fact, correct.

So, yes, they were "right."

EDIT: Anything else? Would you like fries with that?

I still stand by what I said though. I don't think you can justify it without seeing it. That's like a blind person saying the new Star Wars movie is the best ever.

But I understand your an umpire, and you must stand by everything they say.

Wow, how often do you see the guys get ejected for being "right?"

John Ambrose a former Sox farmhand got ejected several years ago after the umpire called a HR (grand slam actually) that hit the wall. He thought it hit the top wall and bounced back in, which would have been a HR. Ambrose, always the fiery one, ran all the way out to LF to argue with the umpire who had made the call. He got ejected by not one, but two different umpires. After the first sent him packing he went after the home plate umpire and he eventually gave him the heave-ho. Not sure if it was just to make a point or if he didn't see the first umpire do it.

Ambrose was right, the ball did not leave the park. In this situation, the call never got changed, however.
