CINCINNATI -- Danny Graves is available for a buck.

The Reds requested unconditional release waivers on Graves on Tuesday, meaning any team can claim him for $1 over the next 48 hours.

Of course, Graves comes with a bit of a higher cost than just a dollar. Any team that claims him during this period must also pay the remainder of his $6.25 million contract.

What's much more likely to happen is that the 48-hour period will pass without action and Graves, who was designated for assignment on May 23, will become a free agent. The Reds would then still be stuck paying off his contract, minus a pro-rated portion of the Major League minimum salary.

"That would be the only offset against our remaining financial obligation," general manager Dan O'Brien said.

In short, unless Graves gets claimed by 1 p.m. ET Thursday -- a move highly unlikely to happen because of the right-hander's hefty salary -- the Reds will be eating the majority of his contract.

Trade talks involving Graves went nowhere.

"Once we got past the preliminary discussions and inquiries, there was limited interest," O'Brien said. "There was just minimal interest. And I guess other organizations have scouts and evaluate players as well."

In evaluating Graves, who spent eight full seasons with the Reds, other clubs saw some rough numbers from this '05 season.

The 31-year-old Graves went 1-1 with a 7.76 ERA and 10 saves in 20 relief appearances for the Reds this season. He posted an ERA of 11.00 in 10 appearances in May, including a 30.38 ERA in his last three games.
