Hernandez was placed on the DL for the second time this season Sunday, this time with shoulder tightness, and will be replaced for Monday's start against Kansas City by rookie Brandon McCarthy. The DL move, retroactive to last Wednesday, came one day after Hernandez was pronounced healthy enough to pitch Monday. But Hernandez then apparently admitted he was hurting more than he originally indicated. Williams was not pleased. "I laid it out in the first conversation [saturday] that we cannot go through this back and forth all year," he said. "I told him, `You need to let me know right now whether I can depend on you or [whether] I need to go out and get somebody else or I need to bring this kid [McCarthy] up.' "This is the big leagues. We are not going to sit around here playing guessing games from week to week." Williams' comments seem to be a warning to Hernandez, who was signed in the off-season for $8 million over two years. In fact, if McCarthy pitches well, Hernandez may not be guaranteed his old starting job. "We have also gotten to the point where it is the best 11 [pitchers] on the staff," Williams said. "So if it turns out that he is still capable of pitching here, helping us in a different role ... whether it be in the bullpen or not ... it is all in his hands. "We are in a position right now where we have to drive as hard as we can toward the finish line. At least toward the All-Star break and the second-half finish line. The best man wins. At this point, Mr. McCarthy has every opportunity to establish himself here without having to worry about any kind of veteran presence." Manager Ozzie Guillen said Hernandez's ongoing shoulder problems are "not serious, but it is a headache. "I don't want `Duque' to start and two or three days [later] we start thinking about what we've got to do. One of biggest reasons [for the DL] is to let [his shoulder] rest, to see if he can become strong. We know we're going to need him in the long stretch." Looking ahead After McCarthy starts Monday, his next scheduled start would be Sunday against the Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field. McCarthy made his big-league debut against the Cubs on May 22 at Wrigley Field, leaving with the lead in a 4-3 loss. He allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Still, Guillen wouldn't officially name McCarthy as Sunday's starter, because the Sox have an off day Thursday and could use Jon Garland on normal rest for Sunday's game. "I don't like to move people, but if we have to do it, we'll do it," Guillen said. "I'm not afraid to pitch [McCarthy] against anybody." McCarthy was 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in his first two starts while Hernandez was on the DL. His second start, against Texas, resulted in a loss after he allowed six runs and four homers in five innings. Pierzynski's two-run bloop single to center was the difference. Pierzynski's hit broke a tie in the sixth inning and sent the White Sox to an 11-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night after blowing a four-run lead. "Every time you win a close one, it's more confidence, but it does drain you a little bit," said Paul Konerko, who was 3-for-4 with four RBI. "That's the give-and-take of it. But ultimately, it's probably a good thing." Konerko, Frank Thomas and Jermaine Dye homered, helping the White Sox extend their win streak to five. Konerko hit a three-run homer in the first, Thomas had a solo shot in the third and Dye led off the fifth with a home run. But the Royals rallied from 7-3 down and tied it 8-all on back-to-back home runs by John Buck and Ruben Gotay in the sixth. The White Sox quickly answered against Ryan Jensen (3-2). Tadahito Iguchi and Konerko singled, and Dye walked to load the bases with two outs. That brought up Pierzynski, whose bloop single to center made it 10-8. The next batter, Joe Crede, gave the White Sox an insurance run with an RBI single to left. "They're playing together, they always find a way to win and they've got a good bullpen, too," Royals starter Jose Lima said. Neal Cotts (2-0) struck out three and allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings, extending his scoreless streak to nine straight outings -- 13 2/3 innings. Dustin Hermanson pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances. Cotts' performance drew this evaluation from manager Ozzie Guillen: "Neal is our MVP over the last two or three weeks." Cotts disputed that, but did say, "I've been throwing the ball pretty well. But other guys are throwing just as well, and guys are coming through with clutch hits." Like Pierzynski, who was 2-for-24 before this game. One of those hits was a game-ending, two-run homer Saturday against the Dodgers. On Monday, he was 3-for-4, including a bunt single. "When you're struggling, in a tie game, you'll take anything you can get," Pierzynski said. "Especially in that situation (the sixth inning). You'll take anything you can get." Konerko hit his team-high 18th home run. Thomas' homer was his sixth in nine hits. And Dye's shot was his 14th. "It's good to hit behind (Thomas)," Konerko said. "Even when he has a tough game, he usually squeaks out a walk, makes the pitchers throw. I've got to think, that no matter how he's going -- good or bad -- the other team focuses on him a lot. Sometimes I get a good pitch to hit because it seems so much energy is (devoted) to him. There might be a letup." Mark Teahen drove in three runs for the Royals. The White Sox got to Lima early, tagging him for seven runs in four innings. That looked as if it would be enough support for Brandon McCarthy, who was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the day to start for Orlando Hernandez. El Duque went on the disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder. But McCarthy got in trouble in the fourth, allowing a two-run double to Teahen. With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, McCarthy balked in a run and left after giving up a two-run double to Matt Stairs that cut the White Sox' lead to 7-6. "The balk was just a rookie mistake," McCarthy said. "I'm sure they were trying to rattle me and that basically worked. I let my lower body hitch a little bit. It's one of those things that you learn and move on from." Paul Konerko also homered for Chicago, and Chris Shelton, who had a career-high four hits, connected for Detroit. Shinjo Takatsu (1-2) pitched 2 2/3 innings for the win. He worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the 13th, striking out Brandon Inge and getting Placido Polanco to hit a grounder to second to end it. Fernando Rodney (2-1) allowed Thomas' home run. The Tigers had chances to break the 3-all tie in the eighth and ninth innings. With runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Chicago shortstop Juan Uribe made a backhanded grab of Polanco's one-hopper and barely got Polanco at first. And in the eighth, the Tigers loaded the bases with none out against White Sox reliever Cliff Politte but failed to score. Polanco and Carlos Guillen opened the inning with singles and Dmitri Young followed with a walk. Politte then struck out Ivan Rodriguez and got Craig Monroe to bounce into a double play to end the inning. Chicago starter Brandon McCarthy allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five. He left after giving up Shelton's triple in the seventh. Shelton then scored on pinch-hitter Rondell White's sacrifice fly off Neal Cotts to make it 3-all. Detroit starter Jason Johnson allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings. Chicago scored twice in the second inning on a RBI single by Joe Crede and on a wild pitch by Johnson. But Detroit tied it in the bottom half on Shelton's two-run homer. His drive into the right-center field stands followed Monroe's one-out single. Konerko's two-out solo home run in the third, his 19th of the season, gave the White Sox a 3-2 lead.
