If anyone deserves to start, it's Nomar. What a year he's having!

NL-leading Cards also tops in voting

Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds among All-Star ballot leaders

The St. Louis Cardinals, owners of the best record in the National League, have three players on pace to start the 76th All-Star Game, according to the vote totals released Wednesday by Major League Baseball.

St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols has received more votes than any National Leaguer with 570,004 ballots, giving him a lead of more than 300,000 over NL Triple Crown threat Derrek Lee of the Chicago Cubs.

Other Cardinals who, if the balloting were to end today, would be in the starting lineup on July 12 at Comerica Park in Detroit are third baseman Scott Rolen and center fielder Jim Edmonds.

Rolen, with 404,004 votes, leads Chipper Jones of Atlanta by more than 100,000 votes. Edmonds is second in the outfield balloting behind Carlos Beltran of New York and ahead of Ken Griffey Jr. of Cincinnati.

Beltran is one of two Mets currently leading his position, along with catcher Mike Piazza. Piazza, an 11-time All-Star, was the NL starter last year in the 75th All-Star Game at Houston and the all-time leading vote getter among catchers.

The rest of the position leaders include Jeff Kent of the Dodgers at second base and Nomar Garciaparra of the Cubs at shortstop.

Griffey, who entered this year's campaign having received more All-Star votes than any player in history with 37,524,916, is bidding for a 13th All-Star appearance and trails only Cal Ripken Jr. (17) and Rod Carew (15).

Piazza, Pujols, Kent, Griffey and Rolen were voted onto the NL starting lineup last season, though Kent went as a member of the Houston Astros. Kent leads Houston's Craig Biggio by 118,839 (371,947 to 253,108) with Mark Grudzielanek of the Cardinals third at 188,254.

Only Pujols has received more support than Beltran, who has 527,433 votes. The Met center fielder is one of eight outfielders who already have more than 215,000 votes. Edmonds, Griffey, Larry Walker of the Cardinals, Miguel Cabrera of the Marlins, Bobby Abreu of the Phillies, Cliff Floyd of the Mets and Andruw Jones of the Braves are the others.

Fans can cast their votes up to 25 times with the Ameriquest All-Star Online Ballot, which is available exclusively at MLB.com and all 30 club sites. Ballots also are being punched at each Major League ballpark. Online balloting ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on June 30.

From July 3-6 fans, fans will once again be able to participate in the Ameriquest All-Star Final Vote, which determines the final position player for each League's 32-man roster.

Griffey, Piazza, and Nomar...such a great system.  Only in baseball.

I wonder what the odds are that Griffey even makes it to the All-Star Break without snapping a hamstring.

Didn't Nomar lead for awhile last year without even playing one game...

Furthur proving how flawed this system is. It's all about name recognition. Regardless of stats. It's the All STAR game.

That's an absolute crime that Bobby Abreu and Miguel Cabrera aren't in the starting outfield.

I agree with you. Griffey? :huh

It's still early in the voting process, but one of them could still make the third spot. Beltran and Edmonds and virtually locked up the first two, though.

Fans vote counts 40%, players vote counts 20%, coaches/managers vote counts 20%, front office/scouts/owners counts 20%.

That way you dont have f***in Garciaparra as the starting SS in a wheelchair in the All-Star game...since it counts and all

Zero percent fan voting. This game supposedly means something now. I would rather not see crippled players out there. I want to see the players out there that deserve it rather than say yadier molina?
