Jabroni
"Notes: Everett starts, Thomas sits Big Hurt says he's healthy as Guillen tries to find at-bats" http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb...t=.jsp&c_id=cws CHICAGO -- Thursday figured to be a very restful day away from baseball for Ozzie Guillen, after watching his White Sox pick up two heart-stopping victories from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to begin the week. But Guillen's day off was anything but relaxing. He wracked his brain over what to do with the designated hitter situation for Friday's series opener against the Indians and the contests lying ahead, including next week's six-game Interleague road trip to Colorado and San Diego. Guillen decided to stick with Everett and his .385 average against Jake Westbrook for Game 1, although Thomas has sufficiently recovered from a sore right hip that knocked him out for two days after his return Monday. Thomas made that health point crystal clear prior to Friday's contest. He didn't have much more to say. "I'm fine. 100 percent," Thomas said. "I don't want to talk today." Guillen wanted to keep Everett in the lineup after the switch-hitter knocked out four hits in his last two starts, a stark contrast from the .197 average over his 21 prior games. But Friday's decision is one that Guillen has to deal with on a daily basis, now that Thomas has returned and is healthy. This lineup maneuvering becomes even tougher for Guillen starting Monday. The designated hitter will be removed for six games, with Everett's only chances to get at-bats coming from a start in the outfield and Thomas' opportunity coming at first base. Of course, those at-bats could come at Jermaine Dye or Paul Konerko's expense. The original plan did not have Thomas playing first at the Major League level unless he played there during his Minor League rehab assignment, which he did not. Now, Guillen isn't sure if Thomas can take the field, but he understands the desire for both players to contribute on a personal and team level. "It's a tough situation for a lot of sides -- Kenny's side, my side and both Carl and Frank because they are free agents and want to play," said Guillen of Everett and Thomas, who both have contractual options for 2006, ultimately controlled by the team. "But they have to be patient and understand I want to try to make the best lineup I can to win the game. "I'm going to have Frank, Carl and maybe (Paul) Konerko, that's three players from the heart of my lineup, possibly not in the lineup (next week). That's the reason I don't like Interleague games. "We have to figure out how we are going to do it this weekend," Guillen added. "We have to figure out if Frank is going to play first base and see what happens." SoxFan1
Carl in right? Nope....Jermaine is getting hot. Carl at DH? Nope....takes away Frank's at bats. Carl in left? Nope....takes away Pods' speed. He is gonna have to be used as a filler every day and give everyone a day off.
3E8
I didn't have a problem with Everett in the lineup given his history against Westbrook. His 2 rbi were the difference in the game.
kev211
You could also play carl in left and pods in center but that takes away aarons hot bat

Jabroni
It made sense to start Carl tonight. He kills Westbrook. I don't fault Ozzie for that one. The Sox won and Frank got another day of rest as well. I'm sure Frank says he's 100% healthy even when he's really not.

fathom
I disagree with anyone saying Everett should be an option in the outfield. Our outfield defense has enough problems without having the worst possible outfielder out there in Everett. Everett also is very likely to get hurt if he's playing in the outfield. I don't know why this is a surprise to anyone that Everett might not get playing time. Everett knew this would be the case, and had no problem picking up his 4 million dollar option to likely be a bench player.
