Money tends to open some eyes.  Let's hope the Sox throw seven figures at him...  Or, at least, that's what I hope.

Keith, they did what you wanted, pick a high profile guy who will be an extremely tough sign. Let's hope it works out for the Sox. Not a bad strategy with a 19th round pick.

I was saying to dan over AIM, you throw 7 figures at an 18/19 year old kid and s*** can happen.

Absolutely, but I can't fault a guy for not wanting to miss out on the college expierence, especially at a place like Austin. That's why when Leinart decided to hang around this season at USC, I applauded him. Believe it or not, not all these future atheltes have money first.

Danks hit .486 this year. Bats lefty, throws right. 6-5, 200. Born 8/7/86. In 75 at bats he had 36 runs, 36 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 10 HR, 30 RBI, and 18 SB.

Scouting report:

Large frame. Large, lean well defined athletic body. Similar to Paul O'Neill. Big-time raw power. Hard contact, ball jumps off bat. LHH w/power potential and plus defensive skills.

No doubt about him wanting to go to college.

But - I'd rather have a long shot to sign a stud than easily sign a scrub - remember it's the 19th round.

I'm extremely happy, signing him or not signing him. It's ballsy to take such a tough sign, let's hope they can get it done.

I'm with ya on that. Calculated risk--let's hope it pays off.

EDIT: Would Borchard money get it done?

I think Danks would have been a mid to late first round pick if he didn't say he wanted to go to Texas. I'd throw 1.5 million at him and see what he does. I think the Sox can go a bit cheap this year with all the JC and CC players in the first 18 picks (6 of them).

The thing is I can't think of a time when the SOx have ever done this, but if they are gonna take a fliar on him I hope they are willing to step up with above slot money. I'd hope they'd go to a mill and see if he bites, but I'd probably agree that it will likely take a little more.

If he had said he wanted to be drafted, what kind of money would he have recieved?

I'd say he's the type of guy that could of went top 15 and could of commanded 1.5-2 mill. It just depends and it helps that he's not repped by Boras. He could of also went a little later, but its gonna take more than mid 1st round money to get him, probably.

$5.3 million?  Isn't that pretty insane?  The guy isn't THAT good is he?

He's got all the ability in the world, but its hard to say what will happen. Sox wouldn't offer it, but he's a very very capable player and its tough to say where he would go if he were open to being drafted, but quite high. He's definately about as good as it gets when it comes to the HS crop.

2.5 would get it done, but I highly doubt the Sox go there. They'd be giving him more money than Broadway.

That or guys with signability issues.

He's got more signability issues than any Boras client too, LOL.

But like we said on AIM yesterday. 1st the Sox draft him, then they need to sign him, then he needs to turn into a star...thats what must happen and than it will be way badass :P :cheers

Question from the Jim Callis chat at BA:

Q:  Shawn Richer from Dallas, Tx asks:

Do you see any team even taking a flyer on drafting Jordan Danks?

A:  Jim Callis: The White Sox did this morning, taking him in the 19th round. He would have been a first-rounder or supplemental first-rounder had he been signable. I still think he goes to college at Texas, but why not take the gamble in the 19th round?

Nothing we didn't know, but still figured I'd post it...
