It looks like it's going to be the AL East plus Vlad & Ichiro starting against the NL.

AL All-Star squad taking shape

Martinez clings to lead at first; three Red Sox hold on

New York Yankees part-time first baseman Tino Martinez, whose slump on the field has not extended to All-Star ballots, continues to lead the voting at his position, standing out as the lone eccentric choice for the American League squad.

Martinez (615,712 votes) held onto the lead despite a dry spell that has lowered his average to .230. However, the popular left-handed hitter's grip could be slipping. The people's choice will have to hold off Mark Teixeira fans' choice.

The Texas run-producer (482,636 votes) has rallied into second place over Kevin Millar of the Red Sox (435,817). Teixeira, with 16 homers among his 33 extra-base hits, is tied for fifth in the league with 48 RBIs, while batting .290.

The other frontrunners for the 76th Midsummer Classic, to be held on July 12 at Detroit's Comerica Park, also retained their leads.

The only other shift on the leader board was Baltimore DH Rafael Palmeiro (350,698 votes) leapfrogging the Yankees' Jason Giambi (307,639) for second place behind the runaway leader, Boston's David Ortiz (1,376,625).

Other Red Sox continuing to lead at their positions are catcher Jason Varitek (909,843 votes), batting .323, and outfielder Manny Ramirez (1,028,207), with 12 homers and 46 RBIs.

Alex Rodriguez is the Yankees' other position leader and also remains in contention for the overall vote lead. The Majors' leader with 19 homers and 56 RBIs has 1,209,382 votes. That total gives Rodriguez an edge of 794,813 over third base runner-up Bill Mueller of the Red Sox (414,569 votes), but leaves him only 167,243 behind Ortiz.

The Baltimore double-play tandem of shortstop Miguel Tejada (1,058,761 votes) and second baseman Brian Roberts (921,377) retained their leads over New York's Derek Jeter (754,536) and Texas' Alfonso Soriano (816,658), respectively. The combined totals of 28 homers and 85 RBIs by Tejada and Roberts tower over those runners-up's combined 21 homers and 62 RBIs.

Although running considerably behind Ramirez, Ichiro Suzuki of the Mariners (992,250 votes) and the Angels' Vladimir Guerrero (933,693) held onto their leads for the other starting positions in the outfield.

The second tier of outfielders also remained unchanged, with Boston's Johnny Damon (875,988 votes) holding slim leads over a pair of Yankees, Gary Sheffield (709,108) and Hideki Matsui (533,630). Boston's third outfielder, Trot Nixon, dropped to eighth place (398,944) behind Minnesota's Torii Hunter (418,768).

konerko should at least be second and iguchi should at least be third, but theres nothing we can do about it

I agree about Gooch, but Konerko has not played well enough to merit an all-star spot....

You don't agree konerko deserves to be second? Besides Teixeira (who should start), who else deserves to be ahead of konerko?

QUOTE(knightni @ Jun 13, 2005 -> 05:33 PM)
Seriously.

As true baseball fans, we have to vote Texiera past Tino Martinez.

That is ridiculous.

Agree completely.

I would like to head the "Official Texeira for starting 1st base spot in the 2005 All-Star game" club.
