"Buehrle's zinger: Cub uses spitter"

June 17, 2005

White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle said Thursday that one of the Cubs' pitchers cheats -- perhaps by using an illegal substance -- during an interview on WSCR-AM (670).

The subject came up during a discussion of Los Angeles Angels reliever Brendan Donnelly, who was caught with pine tar in his mitt.

''I don't want to get too many people in trouble, but I think there are a lot of people who may use something out of the ordinary, even if it's a spitball,'' Buehrle said.

''You see a lot of guys licking their fingers off the mound, which is legal, but when they act like they wipe it on their pants, they're really not wiping it on their pants, they leave their fingers with a little bit of spit to make the ball move a lot. Some of the guys you see out there making the ball move two-three feet, I'd want to check into those guys.''

When asked to name names, Buehrle said: ''I can't get myself in trouble because he's on the North Side. I don't know personally, but I'm just saying from years of experience that he's had success that he very well may be using something.

''Some guys like [sox pitcher Jon] Garland throw a heavy sinker, and a couple of teams this year thought he was cheating because he's having such a good year, and he's one guy I know for sure doesn't.''

Roman Modrowski

It's got to be Maddux. That guy is licking his hands CONSTANTLY when he pitches.

Great journalism. Now reporters don't even have to go to the park to get stories, just listen to the radio and make notes ... sheesh!

I think the spit baller is Glendon Rusch. He threw a lot of funny balls against the Sox.

I hope you mean against the Red Sox. Rusch never pitched against us in the series at Wrigley.

Maddux

Indeed. It makes sense too. He is always licking his fingers and he is getting old now. He needs a little advantage at this point in his career.

you know, I didnt think Maddux at all. I thought Zambrano right away. All I ever see him doing around the mound is licking his whole hand. With the speed he throws and the crazy movement that he gets, I wouldnt be surprised if he throws a spitball.

Maddux does not need any advantage. It's not like umpires gave him a bigger corner of the plate (than other pitchers) through out his entire career.

Last year, 4th of July weekend I think.

It makes more sense that he is talking about Maddux, considering he just faced us in the first game of the series at Wrigley. Buehrle must have saw Maddux licking his fingers and not wiping them off from the dugout since Freddy started that game.

I guess it could also be Zambrano but he already has the natural stuff to blow batters away. I doubt it is Prior.

Could be, he's so old now maybe it's just drool getting on the ball.

Yep, it's gotta be Carlos 'the crybaby' Zambrano. All he does is lick his fingers and play with his nuts on the hill.

He's thinking about his computer, when he does that.

All signs point to one Eddie Harris:

Rick Vaughn: What's that s*** on your chest?

Harris: [wiping his finger across his chest] Crisco,

[wiping it across his waist line]

Harris: Bardol,

[wiping it along his head]

Harris: Vagisil. Any one of them will give you another two to three inches drop on your curve ball. Of course if the umps are watching me real close I'll rub a little jalape"o up my nose, get it runnin', and if I need to load the ball up just

[wipes his nose]

Harris: wipe my nose.

Rick Vaughn: You put snot on the ball?

Harris: I haven't got an arm like you, kid. I have to put anything on it I can find. Someday you will too.

And Maddux is sinker ball pitcher...see the connection, Garland and Maddux. He was thinking about a sinker ball pitcher to use as an example that is having success without cheating, and the example is Garland.

On Silvy and Carmen Bruce Levine is on and said that before the interview Padilla came up to Buehrle and said "I'm rooting for you guys to lose this weekend cause I'm a Dodgers fan." If that's true that's one of the most unprofessional things I've ever heard.

Well kind of, I was just mentioning that cause supposidely(sp?) it happened before this interview.

didnt you know it is illegal to change the subject? Werent we talking about Major League Movie quotes? I mean Mark Buehrle? I mean, this is serious business, the whole changing of the subject thing. Nowhere on this site do you ever observe anyone changing the subject ever. Dont do it again.
