I still have not gotten over the horror of the Dino DeLaurentes remake from the 70's. Of course, next to the criminally bad sequel "King Kong Lives" (where they revived Kong and gave him a giant Jarvex 7 artoficial heart that they happened to have lying around... :bang ), Dino's remake is a work of art.

My problem is that I love the original 1933 Cooper/Schoedsack version so much with all that great stop-action animation that I almost hate seeing it messed with.

But who knows, Jackson may pull it off. Me, I'm still waiting for him to do the big-budget sequel to his masterpiece"Meet the Feebles". :D

I was flipping through the channels at 8:00 and caught the trailer. It looked pretty decent. It's hard for me to take Jack Black seriously in anything he does considering his past roles. There were some weird little demon things in the forest that looked pretty cool too, they could make this into a very good movie.

I love Kong, but this trailer did nothing for me. Purty FX, but it seems to be the same as the original, and that one sure didn't need any fixing at all. Just seems like a waste of a bunch of money. Shame the studios think that kids have no use for the originals. :crying

Now, excuse me while I go watch some Haryhausen on DVD. :headbang

It looks like another MJY picture.  I don't much care to see a King Kong picture that features a Kong so small that the WTC Kong could punt him across NYC :D

 Ummm, in the original film Kong only stood about 18-20 feet tall. Only in King Kong Vs. Godzilla and King Kong Escapes was Kong comparable to Godzilla.

Have you seen the Japan-release ending to KK Versus Godzilla, where Kong dies and Godzilla wins? What am I saying, of course you have.

And what was the name of the Japanese film with the two giant ape things, a good brown one and an evil green one? The Gargantuans or something like that. That was one of my favorite Saturday night Creature Feature flicks as a kid.

I like the Jack Black casting after seeing this teaser. Wasn't a fan of Lord of the Rings, probably cuz I never read the books.

Nice to see a guy who did a successful franchise like LOTR move on to something new.

King Kong teaser

I'm telling you, you haven't seen all sides of Peter Jackson until you've seen Bad Taste and, expecially Meet the Feebles. It's like the Muppet Show on very bad acid.

T-Rex shows up why? This movie looks awful.

The movie is supposed to draw on all of Kongs history. One of Kongs most famous movies is Kong vs T Rex, so they put it in there. Personally I think the CGI looks pretty cool, it looks like they combined Jurassic Park and Kongs island though, not too sure about that.

Some people like remakes (re-imaginations as Tim Burton put it), some people dont.

FlaxxSoxx, I saw Meet the Feebles. Muppets on Acid is a good description, the end scene is crazy. I never thought I would see the day when Muppets had sex and it was shown.

It's a myth. Both the US version and the Japanese version of King Kong Vs. Godzilla have the same ending. Everything else in between the beginning and ending has been messed with though. Whereas the US version is a poorly done affair, the Japanese version is actually a wonderful satire on consumerism with some great stuff going on everywhere. The FX actually are not as poor as they seem to be. The problem many of these films have is that once they get sliced up, you lose the look and scope of the picture and most of the US has no idea how great the cinematography is.

War Of The Gargantuas is the movie. Great movie!

Call me crazy...but maybe because he battled a Rex-like dino in the original. Plus there was the stegasarus on the island in the original. Oh...also the Pterydactyl. It's a lost island where time stood still.

Anybody here ever see the original???

I have, you are correct about T Rex. In the orginal King Kong defeated rex by grabbing both sides of his jaws and prying them apart.

I am excited about this movie, and dont mind saying so. The problem nowadays is that people put too much stock in reality when science fiction/fantasy movies come out. Its a friggin movie about a humungous gorilla who falls in love with a animal 1/100th of its size and defends her. How can the movie be awful because T Rex is in it?

Well, not quite 1/100th of the size. The original was 18-20 ft., and Jacksons will be 24' tall.

I knew you'd be the person to clear that up! :cheers

Now, if only you can tell me why Gamorrah sometimes flies like Superman using just his real leg jets and other times he flies by spinning around like a pinwheel with all four leg jets going, all my childhood Japanese monster movie questions would be answered.

.....Other than the lingering question of how a Godzilla that had been reduced to a rotting skeleton in the original film could come back for so many other films, taht is... :bang

There are soooo many continuity things, do you really want the run down? Yes? O.K.:

The first Godzilla died in the orginal film. The one that carried on through out the 60's into the 70's (known as the "Showa Series" and named so for the Emperor of the time) was the same critter that came about in the second film Godzilla Raids Again, originally known as Gigantis The Fire Monster.

In 1984 he was revived again, this time ignoring the Showa Series and starting afresh. These films are the Heisi Series, and went from Gojira '84 through Godzilla Vs. Destroyah.

Then there was the 1998 Tri-Star travesty. Lowsy Godzilla movie, but a watchable giant monster on the loose flick...I guess.

Toho got pissed at the studio for messing up their critter, so they came back with the Millenium Series, starting with Godzilla 2000, again, a fresh start. With the Millenium Series, they decided that each film was a fresh start, so none of the movies are connected, with the exception of Godzilla x MechaGodzilla and Godzilla, Mothra, MechaGodzilla: Tokyo SOS. The films are so disconnected in the series in fact that two of the films, Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monster All Out Attack and the last movie for awhile Godzilla: Final Wars more or less completely ignore a ton of stuff set-up in the history and universe of Godzilla. In GMK in fact the entire history is turned upside down and Godzilla's symbolism is even changed drastically, and King Ghidorah becomes one of the "saviors" as opposed to his normal role of destruction.

No idea why Gamera flies as he does. But if you have not yet, be sure to check out the three Gamera films made in the 90's. They are amazing films with some of the greatest FX work you will ever see. The stories are great, and extremely effective. The third film even played New York a few years ago, and it was so powerful due to the extreme destruction and realism that the people in attendance actually left the theater in tears since it was too close to 9-11. Those films have a connection to GMK as they were done by the same crews. But seriously, I highly recommend them. They are: Gamera: Gaurdian Of the Universe, Gamera: The Advent Of Legion, Gamera: Revenge Of Iris. Of if you have an interest and can't find them, drop me a PM and I will gladly burn you copies.

See, glad ya got me started??? :P

Gleason, you are my hero. When i was little I absolutely loved Gamera. I always remember that Gamera would come face to face with the victim of the bad guy (whoever it was) after he saved him/her, and then fly off peacefully to his little hole.

Ultraman was a favorite of mine when I could catch it on Saturday mornings, I think it was on Fox. That guy had to have been an early inspiration for the Power Rangers, he looked just like them.

Now you see what you got me started on?

A very helpful rundown of continuity – or non-continuity, in some cases. Thanks.

I always just chalked it up to Toho not really caring about continuity and simply capitalizing on the smash hit they had on their hands by cranking out new films and not worrying about it. Calling Gigantis a member of the same species as Godzilla indicated there was at least some concern that viewers would not buy that Godzilla could regenerate after dying in the first film. Still, they couldn't help muddy the waters here by referring to Godzilla and Gigantis as members of an acnient, long-dormant race without including the nuclear testing element in Gigantis' origin.

As for that second series beginning with 1984, I know they completely screwed up the continuity of all the films with Godzilla Vs. Kking Gidorah by having the time travellers take prehistoric/pre-irradiated Godzilla off the island before the nuclear testing that made him in the original ever happened. So I assume that means NONE of the earlier Godzilla events ever happened. :huh :huh

I've not seen any of the new Gamorrah films. I knew they were doing some new ones but I didn't know they had already turned out three of them. He was hands-down my favorite giant movie monster as a kid. He loved kids, he had a glowing fang signal tooth thing, and he could shoot jets out of his the leg holes in his shell and fly - what's not to like? :D

Gamorrah is really neat, He is filled with turtle meat. Gamorrah is the friend of all children. We love Gamorrah!

They still make Ultra-Man films and shows ya know. The last ones I have seen were pretty cool, and the most recent are supposedly quite good.

The new Gamera films are NOTHING like the old ones. The FX are all great, the stories are really powerful, and Gamera himself is one badass critter now. Though they have started filming Gamera: Little Braves which supposedly returns him to his "friend of children" role. But with the success of the 90's films, I would still expect a really well done film.

That time travel man, it always bites ya in the ass. I can't really remember how they covered that one up, and I am pretty sure that it went down to the whole thing of him never having done anything, but the people involved in the time travel woud still remember him. But when he came back as Godzilla in that film, he was much larger than before, due to the more powerful radiation.

Toho was sloppy, but they TRIED to tie things together...kind of. You get a little continuity, such as Godzilla being sealed in ice in Godzilla Raids Again and being first seen breaking out of an iceberg in King Kong vs. Godzilla, but that was pretty much how they did the continuity in the Showa films. Then they got all wacky when he ended up on a tropical island (though that script was originally written for another Kong film, and that is how the tropical island was brought to use), and budget restraints helped kill things also.

The Heisi series actually follows continuity pretty well, especially Godzilla Vs. MechaGodzilla thru Godzilla Vs. Destroyah.

Oh, and originally the idea was that the Godzilla that appears in Godzilla 2000 was meant to be Godzilla Junior from Godzilla Vs. Destroyah, but that idea was scrapped. So there was that story line continuation. But they decided to go the whole "brand new story" approach.
