My main beef about this otherwise great site

I switch off a fair amount between this site and the MLB Sox site, though I've posted a lot more in the past. But the one thing that drives me away from here is how long it takes to wade through to find something interesting to read. In between are all these huge personal photos and tag lines and a lot of stuff that may have looked cool the first time you put it up, but after seeing it repeated 10 times in a single thread, becomes awfully tiresome.

Y'all can shout me down if you want. But give me a site where I can read 5 messages in a row on one screen of my computer and don't spend my entire time scrolling down, down, down just to find something.

Overall I think the posters here are more knowledgeable baseball fans and have better analyses, but frankly it takes way too long to find it. Especially when so many posts are just chit chat and don't really add anything to the discussion.

For example, I just looked at the composite trade post. I think that's a good idea. But the whole first page was filled with nothing but puff. Not a single trade idea or analysis. Out of 4 pages, there weren't 3 threads worth reading. Everything else was just empty chatter. And I think the trend is not good. A couple of years ago, I felt like the ratio of seeing a post worth reading to those of zero value was much better.

Sorry, that's just the way I feel.

If you go to your "My Controls" you can turn off avatars and signatures. It's very useful for me, as I post from work often.

Okay. Good suggestion. But I don't see where to do it. The only Avatar or signature links I see under My Controls are for my own. I don't see how to turn off everyone elses.

I think I have figured it out. Thanks. So at this point I would be happy to delete this post, though I still think people should try to write less personal chit chat and more baseball info that a stranger might be interested in reading.

it's a decently close group of people here. There's only 100 or so real active posters (around).

of course we're going to have chit-chat.

Hell, i tailgated w/ 3 different posters from this site before the game today.

So, there that is.

Your words are well taken. However, I would like you to consider that the pride we have in soxtalk is to allow Sox fans of all flavors, young, old, knowledgeable, and some newbies to converse in a place that there are little restrictions on content.

Some good relationships and friendships away from the game have blossomed from this site, and that's why we try to let the content take a course of its own.

Please do, however, keep the comments and ideas coming. If you would ever want to talk more with any of the admins here, click on the red names at the bottom and shoot them a private message.

Again, thanks for the comments. We appreciate it.

We've been trying to have people keep the sigs to a decent size, because even though I like them it does get to be a pain in the ass to have to scroll through a ton of them.

As for the amount of concrete thoughts versus mindless chatter, well I think you need a little of both.

There are too many pictures on here but you can turn them off so that's not an issue. Everybody can have it their own way...which is nice.

My only issue, and I'm going to get totally flamed for this because I really have no reason to say anything since I just started posting last week, is that the board allows to much swearing and innappropriate things be posted.

I'm no prude and I swear a lot when I talk but for some reason I feel that it makes the board feel more juvenile with all of the swearing. Maybe I just feel like forums are more of a public venue where you use public manners and try and not swear, but that's just me. I'm not saying this place has to change but it may be a reason I look for a different Sox board. And it's too bad because there's a lot of really good posters here that know their Sox baseball and I'd love to have this be my board.

Part of why I thought about this also was that I wanted to suggest a good place for my dad to follow Sox games in Minnesota besides just checking the sports or mlb sites that do gameday stuff but I really couldn't suggest this place to him because it's way too vulgar.

Again, I'm really not trying to rip on this place. It's a great forum and everybody likes their forums different and if you guys like it that way that's totally fine. I just like one that's a little more heavily moderated in that regards.

Now feel free to curse me out for this post...

I think your viewpoints are very fair and balanced.

We swear here ... I personally drop the f-bomb now and again, as well as some lesser profanity ... but I do agree it's too vulgar at times. And anyone who has met me knows I am the furthest thing from a prude.

Anyways, I think your post was great and has validity.

I agree that cursing can be unecessary here. But, Soxtalk was created because it is less restrictive than other Sox messageboards.

I can't say that I have never cursed here, but I try not to make a habit of it. I am fully capable of keeping my posts PG, if necessary.

This site tends to skew younger than the average fan site, so people here can tend to be more "act first and think second" at times.

Admins: Is there a way to have an optional cursing filter if someone wants it?

The entire purpose of this site, the way I see it, is to give Sox fans a venue to express their feelings towards thier favorite team in a forum moderated a less strickly than other boards. This way people can express their true feelings without being censored. Again this is IMO.

I never found the language on this site to be a problem, you don't see a ton of senseless vulgarity. People will use profaine language to express the way they feel about a situation. There are no personal attacks towards others using vulgarity, it's usually used towards a certain situation.

I personally like the feel of the site where it's just a bunch of Sox fans talking about there team, using the kind of language they would use if they were talking in person.

Sometimes you just have to use that kind of language to get across the way you feel and vent. Using a censored vocab. just doesn't do the trick sometimes.

You're entitled to your opinion and I have a feeling noone is going to flame you for it.

The stuff you read in the forums is nothing. You should check out the game chat, we let loose in there.
