Pitching w/o the lead and holding the opposition > Pitching with a 1-4 run lead and getting 3 outs.

jesus. pitching without the lead is more important than pitching with a one-run lead in the ninth? come on man. stick to the stats argument.

and you don't get saves for coming into a game with a four-run lead.

So in your mind this year:

Foulke> Politte because he closes games and cliff doesn't.

Yup, Octavio Dotel, Mike McDougal, Ugueth Urbina are all better than Politte too!

It seems now that you're focusing in on one guy (Soxfan1) and ignoring the other solid arguments being stated.

Uuuum, yes. You can get credited with a save for up to a 5-run lead buddy. I've seen it done.

Getting the 3-4-5-6 hitters out in the 7th and 8th is easier than getting the 7th-8th/PH-PH out in the 9th?

so now politte faces the heart of the order every time he comes in. right.

Getting out of a 1st and 2nd, nobody out jam in the 8th is so much easier than starting an inning and getting 3 outs, right?

and he always comes in to ridiculous jams? have you watched games this year? our starters almost always finish the inning. i'd say about 80 percent of politte's appearances have come when he's starting an inning with no one on.

yes, you can. but that's only when the tying run is on deck. you can't just start an inning with a five-run lead and get a save.

That's why he's inherited 24 runners this year right?

he leads the al in saves. he has an era of 2.80. he's 21 of 24 in save opps. he pitches much more meaningful innings than politte. sorry if i failed to mention that.

I am totally dumbfounded by that statement.

Politte has been in the setup role almost the entire year, and he has pitched out of a good amount of jams(as proven by his 4 for 24 IHRS), and has pitched in enough tie ballgames, as Willie mentioned, to get 5 wins, along with having 7 holds. You also have to realize that if you pitch when the team is down by 1 or 2, you are not going to get a hold, but to keep the opposition at bay, not allowing them to score any more runs is vital. You think we have as many late run rallies because Vizcaino has been pitching in those innings?

This argument is even more true considering this current team. With Cliff being able to keep the opposition at bay the Sox have come back so many times in the late innings.

alright. jerry's final thought:

you guys believe that since cliff politte has awesome numbers as a middle reliever, he should go to the all-star game

i believe that a closer with a sub-3 era who leads the league in saves is more deserving, despite the fact his era and whip are higher. i consider the 21 of 24 in save opps are more important. that's just my opinion.

i got nothing but love for you all. peace, love and white sox baseball.

But Wickman leads the league in saves with his 2.80 ERA!

April: 3/9 appearances were not starting an inning

May: 6/10 appearances were not starting an inning

June: 2/9 appearances  were not starting an inning

FWIW

Not to mention 24 inherited runners. With only 4 of those scoring.

It's cool

Would hate to see Wickman in the ASG over Cliff, but it's not like I wouldn't understand why.

I just hate Wickman.

And Politte has probably been the best reliever in the majors this year, all things considered. That's why I feel he should go. He won't go, because middle relievers are underly appreciated by most, and he also won't go because Francona is a homer and will have Timlin go instead.

Middle relievers in MLB = Kickers in NFL????
