Rogers breaks bone hitting water cooler

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kenny Rogers broke a bone in his non-pitching hand when he hit a water cooler in frustration, and the Texas Rangers pitcher will miss at least one start.

Rogers, 9-3 with an American League-leading 2.46 ERA, broke a bone at the base of his right pinkie finger after coming out of his last home start, on June 17 against Washington, Rangers manager Buck Showalter said Monday.

Rogers gave up six runs, 10 hits and three walks in 3 1-3 innings of a 6-0 loss last Wednesday at the Los Angeles Angels. He had won his previous nine decisions.

Showalter said the left-hander will miss his scheduled start Tuesday against the Angels and could miss another turn.

Rogers was not in the Rangers’ clubhouse before Monday night’s game against the Angels. Texas had to make a roster move to clear a spot for Gerald Laird, who was in the starting lineup.

The Yankees’ Kevin Brown broke his left hand when he punched a clubhouse wall in frustration last Sept. 4. The right-hander needed surgery and didn’t pitch again until Sept. 26.
