greasywheels121
http://whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/ar...t=.jsp&c_id=cws Notes: Marte placed on disabled list Left-hander Walker called up from Triple-A Charlotte By Scott Merkin / MLB.com DETROIT -- First, the bad news for Damaso Marte and the White Sox. The left-handed reliever was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed left trapezius on Thursday morning, a move made retroactive to June 27. It's a problem that has left Marte working at less than 100 percent since he first injured himself while pitching in Colorado on June 8. But a little bit of good news does exist in the midst of this particularly negative announcement. The White Sox will miss Marte for only slightly more than one week's worth of games, with the All-Star Game break beginning on July 11. They also can turn to a capable left-handed reliever in Kevin Walker, who arrived in Detroit from Triple-A Charlotte after receiving the news around 12:30 on Thursday morning. Ozzie Guillen's crew even managed to survive for victory No. 52 on Wednesday night, despite both Luis Vizcaino and Shingo Takatsu being extended over two innings of relief. After the 4-3 victory in 13 innings, Guillen mentioned that Marte was unavailable because of a trip back to Chicago earlier in the day to take care of personal business. That personal business was revealed on Thursday to be an examination of his shoulder, where he received a clean bill of health. "He's been on and off, good and bad, but he's not hurt. He's just sore," said Guillen of Marte, who declined to talk with reporters. "There's one thing about my players -- I keep saying, 'Tell me what you have. What's going on with you guys,' because we are going to listen (to the players). "I'm going to protect your career. I don't want anyone to go out there and, all of a sudden, he can't pitch for the rest of his life." Marte posted a 3-3 record with a 2.81 ERA and 29 strikeouts over a team-high 34 appearances. He also has limited right-handed hitters to a .208 average. Marte had pitched in four consecutive scoreless outings, but Guillen mentioned that there were a number of nagging issues coming up with Marte during the past three weeks, to the point where Guillen didn't feel comfortable using him on Wednesday. Thursday's move was also made to protect the rest of the White Sox bullpen, with pitchers such as Neal Cotts, Luis Vizcaino or even Cliff Politte in danger of being overused if Marte was on the active roster but unavailable. Ultimately, though, Guillen wants Marte at 100 percent for the second-half push. "Hopefully, he will come back strong, because we are going to need this kid for the next three months," Guillen said. "There are a lot of games to go. He was pitching with pain, but you don't have to be a hero. Be a hero when you are on the field." Strength in numbers: In replacing Marte, Guillen singled out Bobby Jenks as one possibility being considered. The right-handed closer for Double-A Birmingham was selected as a Southern League All-Star and also picked to play in the Futures Game in Detroit, taking place the day prior to the All-Star Game. Jenks has also been consistently hitting 100 mph with his fastball. But the White Sox logically opted for a second left-hander in Walker, 28, who went 0-1 with a 12.00 ERA in four games during his first stretch with the team this season. Walker knows that his work won't be regular, but he's simply excited to be part of a winning team once again. "It feels great to be back. It's actually been fun watching these guys play every day," Walker said. "It seems like every time I turn on the TV, it's a Sox win or a Sox come-from-behind win. "In all honesty, I'm just happy to be part of this. Never in my life in baseball have I been part of a winning club, a championship caliber club. I want to do my part in any way possible." Guillen was also impressed by the work of Vizcaino and Takatsu, making an already deep bullpen even stronger. Takatsu has not only made five straight scoreless appearances, covering 7 1/3 innings, but his 2 2/3 innings of relief on Wednesday proved his versatility to Guillen. "I didn't want to be left behind, with all the other guys doing so well," said Takatsu through a translator. "With championship teams, they always have a good bullpen." "It was a matter of time before he put it back on track," Guillen added of Takatsu. Still in play: The Brandon McCarthy who worked 6 1/3 innings on Wednesday against the Tigers was the same impressive young hurler Guillen remembered from Spring Training, a right-hander who finished 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA over five starts. It was a strong enough effort for McCarthy to earn a July 4 start at home against the Devil Rays, while the team takes its time bringing back Orlando Hernandez from the disabled list. "He was real calm on the mound, executed his pitches and used his breaking ball for strikes," Guillen said of McCarthy. "Yesterday wasn't a crucial thing to see how he did. "I [saw] a special thing in Spring Training. This kid was going to be special. I compared this kid to Jack McDowell. I see the McCarthy that was in Spring Training." Return to sender: Ryan Wing, 23, who was claimed on waivers by the Texas Rangers on Oct. 6, 2004, from the White Sox, was reclaimed by the White Sox on Thursday, then optioned to Class A Winston-Salem. The White Sox originally took the left-hander in the second round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, one pick above Oakland's Danny Haren. He didn't pan out with the South Siders, with mechanical issues leading to eventual arm problems. He missed the entire 2004 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Down on the farm: Jamie Burke certainly made a favorable impression during Curt Schilling's first Minor League rehab start on Wednesday night against Triple-A Charlotte. Three of Burke's four hits came against the right-hander during the Knights' 5-4 victory over Pawtucket. Leo Daigle, who was promoted from Class A Winston-Salem, launched his first home run and drove in three. Jeff Bajenaru earned the victory in relief. Francisco Hernandez, a highly rated catching prospect within the organization, finished 4-for-4 during Great Falls' 4-3 loss to Missoula. Coming soon: Barring a weather-related change, Jose Contreras will make his 16th start of the season on Friday in Oakland and his first on the road since June 7. Contreras has held opponents to a .255 average, third best in the American League, and the right-hander has a 1-1 career record against Oakland with a 7.43 ERA. ChiSox_Sonix
we got Wing back?!?!?! That's awesome! Ya, he's been slowed by injury but he is real young and hasnt lost enough time to lose his prospect status, IMO. I remember him putting up great numbers a couple years back, hopefully he can pick up where he left off (note: i havent looked at what he's done this year yet, if anything)
Y2HH
I don't remember him at all. And until they pitch successfully in the majors, I don't care what kind of numbers they put up in the minors. Weren't Willy Dilly Harris and Joe Popsup Crede CAN'T miss future superstars that would both bat 300+ in the majors?! PFFFFFT. QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 03:27 PM) we got Wing back?!?!?!
