palesox38
Okay, now many of you may say that you don't have a relationship with Schmidt, but you may very soon, so let's take a look at the differences(Overall career with some of this years stats) Contreras Can Hit 95 MPH No Confidence Shows flashes of greatness Inconsistent This Season: 3-5 4.35 ERA Schmidt Can Hit 95 MPH Savvy Veteran World Series experience Devastating changeup Pitching inside= lots of confidence This Season: 6-4 5.10 ERA (ya its a little high) Now- you may still rather have Contreras, but when the Giants traded for Schmidt in 2002, He was 6-6 with a high ERA. When he got to the Giants he went 7-1 with an ERA in the mid three's. My point is if you put this guy on a winning team, he will be consistent and give solid outings, and hes on pace to have almost a 200 inning season, and this is with the shoulder problem at the beginning of the year. I think he would fit in great and with him you have 4 aces and potentially 4 #1 pitchers. Take a look: Mark Buehrle Freddy Garcia Jason Schmidt Jon Garland Orlando Hernandez P.S.- MLB.com says that the sox may trade Arnie Munoz and Sean Tracey in the Schmidt deal. So I think we will keep Anderson and McCarthy.
wsox08
I think Contreras has potential and will learn to pitch well. He had a good season with the Yanks and could easily get back into that rhythm.
rangercal
QUOTE(palesox38 @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 01:56 AM) P.S.- MLB.com says that the sox may trade Arnie Munoz and Sean Tracey in the Schmidt deal. So I think we will keep Anderson and McCarthy. I didn't read that. This is what I read. It says nothing about schmidt. Chicago (AL): Untouchables include Brian Anderson, Ryan Sweeney, Brandon McCarthy and Josh Fields, but the White Sox might be willing to part with some arms in their upper levels. Southpaw Arnie Munoz still should have some value as a lefty specialist, while maybe a starter like Sean Tracey could be wrested for the right price. DBAHO
The thing is on Schmidt is this, and it's what the Sox have to decide. Is he the pitcher we've seen over the first 2 months of the season, or the pitcher we saw in the last month? His .BAA and splits away from SBC are very, very bad which makes me very leery of making a deal for him. Contreras can be a succesful pitcher, and the 1st 2 months showed that. Once again it's the usual things, falling in love with his forkball, walking guys etc., but he should at least be the 5th guy in our rotation. And Munoz and Tracey will only be small cogs in a Schmidt deal. You gotta think one of Fields, McCarthy, Anderson or Sweeney will have to be included also. And I think the point made on Schmidt turning it around in 2002 was more of him pitching in a real pitchers park in San Fran, than pitching for a winning team. AnthraxFan93
WHY is people have such a hard-on for Schimdt, when AJ burnett is the best SP for this team?
VAfan
QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 02:02 PM) WHY is people have such a hard-on for Schimdt, when AJ burnett is the best SP for this team? Because Schmidt might be had for Contreras and some insignificant throw ins and can help us this year and next, while Burnett will require major prospects and likely can't be signed for next year, esp. if we are still carrying Contreras's $8 million. knightni
What is it with new people and polls? It's like moths to flame. Schmidt would be a steal if his cost was merely Contreras, Tracey and Munoz. The Sox would actually be saving on payroll with the deal. Contreras salary (41 games) $4,250,000 Schmidt salary (41 games) $4,093,750 Edited July 5, 2005 by knightni

Stephen
I think Contreras is a waste of time. In his short career his "flashes of brilliance" have been just that. He'll be in the 5.00+ ERA club very soon. I would much rather take my chances with Schmidt who has shown he can be good for an extended period of time as opposed to a guy who everyone is waiting to be good.
