–Mark Buehrle

lhp, White Sox

Buehrle finished one victory short of 20, which would have made him the first White Sox pitcher since Jack McDowell to reach that plateau. He pitched against Albert Pujols in the 1999 junior college regional playoffs–Pujols drilled a two-run homer off him, but Buehrle’s team won the game–and both have ascended at a shockingly rapid rate ever since. Once considered just another promising arm in a deep stock of White Sox pitching prospects, Buehrle has surpassed them all to become Chicago’s ace. He’s not overpowering, but he commands four solid pitches and is durable, pitching 460 innings over the last two seasons.

Honorable Mention: Diamondbacks closer Byung-Hyun Kim (8-3, 2.04, 36 saves) and Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins (.245-11-60, 31 steals) were NL all-stars. Kim bounced back nicely from his disastrous 2001 World Series, while Rollins has made it to the midsummer classic in each of his two full seasons in the majors . . . RHP Joel Pineiro was the most consistent pitcher in the Mariners rotation, going 14-7, 3.24 . . . Pineiro couldn’t quite pull Seattle into the playoffs, but Angels RHP John Lackey and Twins OF Michael Cuddyer made their clubs’ postseason rosters after starting the year in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. Lackey went 9-4, 3.66 in 18 big league starts as Anaheim set a franchise record for victories. Cuddyer had a tough time cracking Minnesota’s outfield during the regular season, but he hit .309-20-53 in 86 PCL games and started in right field for the Twins in the playoffs . . . It took him a while, but OF Vernon Wells finally established himself with the Blue Jays, batting .275-23-100.

Previous Winners

1998–Alex Rodriguez, ss, Mariners

1999–Vladimir Guerrero, of, Expos

2000–Andruw Jones, of, Braves

2001–Mark Mulder, lhp, Athletics

idk if jr doesnt f*** up the core we have now(buerle, mags, pk etc.) and the good youngsters we have coming up this wave(crede etc.) and the next wave(adkins etc.) i think we could have a pretty good year if we maybe sign one other guys if needed i think jr can afford that if he locks them um now i would offer crede a 5 year 10 million deal and buerle a 5 year deal 3-4 million a year deal deal right now while they are cheap i think we would win buerle over because thats wut he wants

If we sign one good starter, I guarantee playoffs as long as something horrible doesn't happen.

If we land Maddux or Glavine we will be set. Buerhle and the other gives us two #1's and then Garland and Wright are both solid and we have plenty of guys to be our #5.

Maddux and Glavine, no. Paul Byrd, maybe.

Now would Frank not being here count as "something horrible"?

No, I'm pretty indifferent on the idea of Frank. Some days I want him back, others I don't.

I'm not inndifferent on the fact we need another pitcher, if that guy happens to be Paul Byrd, then I'll be happy, especially if he can duplicate or even grow on what he did this season.

I am so glad that we have Buerhle on our side. The SOX better lock him up for years to come. We, SOX fans better be proud of our lefty ace. That list of the past winners are pretty heavy company to be in.

I hope the management just make the right moves on adding a starter that brings in a WINNING ATTITUDE and nothing else.

Buerhle is awesome.  We all have to be proud of him, its amazing what he's done at such a young age.  I only hope he gets better and stays healthy and of course stays with the Sox.

I pray to god that he become to the sox what Glavine and Maddux have become to ATL
