Work dress code...

A little rant..

For whatever reason at work here capri pants are not allowed. :rolly

Yesterday someone wore them and this morning she got advised not to do so any more from her boss. She told me about it. So I take a stroll around the building when I had to pick some stuff up from the print room and I saw 22 dress code violations. This girl, good worker, rarely ever hear a peep from her (thought I don't really work with her) would not surprise me at all if she tried to take some sort of legal action. Personally I think the dress code is stupid, but if you're gonna have one you have to enforce it for everyone. I can't say I blame her if she does something. I think it's unfair for anyone to be singled out.

I thought the capri battle was won two years ago and only really fat people (guys or gals) can't wear them!?

We have a couple of Capris in our garage...err...wrong type of Capris.

We have a dress code that is kind of enforced. Don't show up looking like you are out for a day on the beach and you should be okay (technically it is business casual, but some of our cust. service people don't quite wear business casual).

LOL.. na. It was never really resolved. I wear them when I'm not supposed to, so I'm guilty. I would never reprimand another employee though.. too many rules surrounding the dress code are broken on a daily basis. My motto is if it looks professional it's fine. Companies much larger and more hands on with their customers allow them. I don't see the big deal.

We just had a dress code put in place because, "we are growing rapidly." This comes after the no-dating policy (the owners are married and there are/were 7 couples that are currently dating/married or met here). Also, the Workplace Answers Harrassment, online seminar we just had to take.

But, back to the dress code. It was put in place less than a month ago. One of the things we can no longer do is wear shorts. Then we have 30 straight days of upper 90's/lower 100's weather with absolutely no rain. Now...it ain't my company, but if it were me, I think I would wait until it gets down to below egg-frying-on-the-pavement, that's-not-cologne-that's sweat, shoes-sticking-to-the-blacktop hot.

But, I agree with the black or white scenario, if and only if, they put it in writing. But, it has to be dealt with equally, from owners down to mailroom. NO EXCEPTIONS. Again, that's if, and only if, they put it in writing. Personally, I think it should be on a case-by-case basis.

It's in writing.. thing is.. barely anyone follows it. And then there are ther idiot managers who don't bother to enforce it. Some area's it's bad. The customer service girls dress like hookers - seriously.. capri's with 2 inch heels, and shirts cut waaaay low in the front. They don't work for me and I don't deal with them so I don't care.. but some of these gals have no business dressing like that but no one tells them it's not appropriate. :huh

I keep hearing her talking about it... I think she's going to make some waves.

That's always been my problem with these overarching statements of codes. Enforcement. Another one of the dress code issues is offensive language on clothing. Who determines what's offensive? I have a workshirt that a friend of mine silkscreened the word Poop on it. Is that offensive? Well, I asked and the HR lady said it wasn't. But, what if someone complains? Does that all of a sudden make it offensive? This is an advertising firm, not an accounting firm. And we are in Austin, Texas, where the dress code at the fanciest restaurant in town is...don't wear shorts or ripped jeans.

I'm sorry, but you can't make a gray area black and white. But if you want to, then, like you said Steff, enforce it. And enforce it for everyone.

As a side note, the non-shorts wearing dress code came out on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and one of the owners showed up wearing shorts that Friday.

Good luck to that woman. I hope they don't consider her a problem employee and terminate her.

Steff, I feel her pain....... last time I wore capris, my boss "strongly suggested" I not wear them again. I was flabberghasted, as I am sure you can imagine!!

Tell your friend to get back at them the creative way.......

Tomorrow, tell her not to wear any pants at all!! That'll teach those stupid, commie bosses!

I'm pretty sure capri pants went out of style when my mom bought one in every color.

:lolhitting As I read that, I looked over and saw my Mom wearing them too.

The dress code at my work is...I have to wear my DQ hat, my DQ shirt, my trainee nametag, tennis shoes, and khacki shorts/pants. I only follow it during the day when the boss is in. Not being able to wear capris is something that I don't want anyone to ever have to go through.

I know this, one of the best things about working in downtown Chicago is casual Fridays in the summer. The eye candy  ;) is jaw dropping.

Thank you, that is all.

If there is one great thing about the hot summers, that is it!

Try living in Alabama from March to October.........

Nothing like Southern women, I'm telling you.

I believe you. I've known a few southern ladies and on top of being very beautiful, they are very feminine and lady like.

I'm confused.

1.) What's wrong with Capris? They're pretty universally flattering and very modest

2.) Why does Wino have a pair?

Well.. one of the things I have heard and seen is some females abusing what is actually a "capri". Some of them are wearing them at knee length which they consider shorts. Then there are those females who are 5 feet tall and 200lbs trying to fit into a size 2... Then there are some wearing 2" heels with them. It's crazy and ruining it for those of us that wear the tailored ones.

The policy is likely to be more enforced now. I don't think it's fair she got singled out (nice looking girl 5'6" or so 130lbs) so it's only fair that none of us be allowed to wear them on non casual days.

So stupid.

And I have no idea why Wino has a pair..
