Rollins, Wagner late additions to NL All-Star squad

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins and left-handed closer Billy Wagner have been added to the National League All-Star team. The two will join Bobby Abreu, elected as a starter by the fans, as the Phillies' representatives. For Rollins, it will be his third trip to the Midsummer Classic and for Wagner, his fourth.

Rollins, 26, was added as a replacement for Dodgers shortstop Cesar Izturis, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier this week. Rollins finished second among NL shortstops on the players' ballot. He was selected as an All-Star reserve player during his rookie season of 2001 and was elected by the fans as the starting shortstop in 2002. He was 2-for-2 with a walk, stolen base and two runs scored in his two All-Star appearances.

Going into play today, Rollins leads all NL shortstops in hits (94), runs (52) and total bases (138). Overall, he is hitting .268 with 13 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 23 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 82 games.

Wagner, 33, was added as a replacement for Mets starter Pedro Martinez, who will make his final start of the first half on Sunday. Wagner is 1-1 with 20 saves (in 22 opportunities) and a 2.35 ERA in 37 appearances this season. In the latest Rolaids Relief Man standings, released today, he ranked third among all NL relievers, behind fellow All-Stars Chad Cordero (#1) and Jason Isringhausen (#2). His 20 saves are tied for fourth in the NL. Wagner's previous three All-Star appearances all came as a member of the Astros in 1999, 2001 and 2003. He was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA (1 ER, 2.0 IP) in the three games. This will be his fourth straight All-Star appearance in an American League park.

The last time the Phillies had three players at the All-Star Game was 2002, when Rollins, Scott Rolen and Vicente Padilla went. Wagner is the first Phillies reliever to go since Ricky Bottalico in 1996 and first left-handed reliever since Al Holland in 1984. Rollins is the first Phillies shortstop to go three times since Larry Bowa's five appearances (1974-76, 78-79).

They're replacing a SS with an SS and a pitcher with a pitcher.  Can't say I blame them for that.

I'm not blaming MLB or whomever for Wagner being chosen, but they can chose another 3B. They already have another SS in Felipe Lopez on the team. Plus, there's also a DH this year. Ensberg could've subbed for whoever takes that role.

It's sad to see ensberg get snubed like this because he deserves it more than rolen and aramis ramirez. Actually a worse allstar snub than Ducherer instead of hermanson. Hey but if this gives homefield advantage to the AL ill take it.
