Indians deal Cora for Vazquez

Alex Cora to the Red Sox on Thursday in exchange for infielder Ramon Vazquez.

The Indians had signed Cora in the offseason to a two-year deal, and they had looked for him to give the team depth at shortstop and at second base. He was even thought to be the replacement for second baseman Ronnie Belliard had he not re-signed.

But Cora, 29, had been a disappointment. He never was able to provide any offense, though he was solid defensively at shortstop and at second base. He batted .205 (30 for 146) with 11 runs scored, five doubles, two triples, a home run and eight RBIs in 49 games. He made 22 starts at shortstop and 14 starts at second base.

In Vazquez, the Indians are picking up another left-handed bat. He appeared in 27 games with the Red Sox before he was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

The Indians announced that the 28-year-old Vazquez would report to Triple-A Buffalo, and Cora's place on the roster would go to left-handed pitcher Brian Tallet, who was called up last month before heading back to Buffalo.

But the move leaves the Indians short a position player, which seems to signal that the organization is planning another move

He's another guy who's really dropped off from last year...his career batting average is at least as good as Crede's...you don't pick up Alex Cora expecting him to be a huge RBI guy I know, but dropping from .264 to .205? That's a hell of a drop.
