bjm676
AL starter comes down to Sox Garland or Buehrle likely to get the nod in Detroit CHICAGO -- The buzz surrounding whether a White Sox pitcher will start the All-Star Game grew even louder on Saturday, as news came of Roy Halladay's broken leg. Halladay was struck in the left shin by a line drive off the bat of Texas' Kevin Mench in Toronto's game on Friday night. X-rays showed a non-displaced fracture that will sideline the pitcher for at least a month. Mark Buerhle, Jon Garland and Halladay had been talked about as the likely candidates for the nod as starter for the All-Star squad, but Halladay looked to have the best chance to start. With Halladay's injury it appears that one of the Sox aces will be in line to get the start. Manager Ozzie Guillen was surprised at the news of Halladay's injury and, though he was sad to hear of the injury, Guillen said that having one of his pitchers start the game would be a great experience and make the game a must-see for him. "I have to [watch it] now, if one of my guys is going to start," Guillen said with a laugh. Garland has the most wins of any pitcher in the American League, 13, but did not have his best start heading into the All-Star break, as he allowed three runs on eight hits in only five innings on Friday night. For Garland, getting the opportunity to start in his first ever appearance at the All-Star Game would be the ultimate opportunity. "It would definitely be a great honor," Garland said. "First off, just to be an All-Star and make the team, then to have the opportunity to start would be a thrill." Buehrle has not been the beneficiary of as much run support as Garland, but his numbers and performances have been just as impressive. Heading into his final start of the first half on Saturday, Buehrle was 10-2 with a 2.58 ERA. With Buehrle and Garland having similar hot starts to the season, it would be a difficult decision for Guillen to make as to whom to start but one that he would try to look at based upon numbers. "I don't know," Guillen said of who he'd start. "It would depend on the lineup of the National League team. If they have more lefties, I'd start Buehrle, and righties, I start with Garland." Most of the talk around the two pitchers may be focused on who will start, but fellow All-Star Paul Konerko said that pitching in an All-Star Game is enough of an honor in itself. "A lot of emphasis is put on who starts the game, but all those innings are important when you're talking about the All-Star Game," Konerko said. greasywheels121
I really don't know who will get it, but we're safe either way with one of them going. Our rotation was set up after the ASB to have both of them on regular rest, IF they pitched in the ASG. It also sets up Buehrle, Garland, and Garcia pitching the most games against the ALC. Our rotation after the ASB: Contreras Garcia Buehrle Garland El Duque (BMac)
