Bristol's Sanchez may be in the Show one day

BY BUCKY DENT

Bristol Herald Courier

Speculating on the future of an Appalachian League player is almost as risky as smoking.

You can be an All-Star one day, a waiver wire arrivee the next day. Every player has ability, but the trick is getting that ability to show every game.

Although his pro career is less than two weeks old, Bristol outfielder Salvador Sanchez appears to have the knack of doing something special every night.

Saying that Sanchez has a chance to do something special in a Sox uniform – say, in 2010 in Chicago – might seem a reach. But before you scoff at that hypothesis, you might want to listen to manager Jerry Hairston.

"He’s got all the tools," Hairston said a couple of days before Bristol’s opener. "I really like his actions."

And why shouldn’t he? Entering last night’s home game with Pulaski, Sanchez was hitting .311 with two homers and 10 RBIs. He was slugging .556 and getting on base in nearly 40 percent of his plate appearances.

Defensively, Sanchez has already played all three outfield positions, displaying the range required in center and flashing the intimidating arm in right field scouts love.

What’s not to like about Sanchez? If you really wanted to quibble, his baserunning seems shaky at times; he wasted an inning’s worth of outs in a four-game span this week with bad decisions. But Sanchez has a basestealer’s speed and you can teach someone to make good choices on the bases.

The other stuff which he’s done – opposite field home run power, the ability to hit tough pitches off the wall, one-hop strikes from 300 feet away – can’t be taught.

The BriSox go on the road today for a week-long trip to Pulaski and Burlington. They return home on July 12 for a six-game homestand.

You might want to make a trip to DeVault Stadium to catch Sanchez. One day, you might say you saw a future big-leaguer in the formative stages of his career.

Knuckling Down

For proof that predicting future major leaguers is hard, just look back to Charlie Haeger’s 2004 season in Bristol.

The knuckleballing righthander went 1-6 with a 5.18 earned run average. Although the team around him wasn’t great, Haeger also gave up 70 hits and 41 runs in 57 1/3 innings.

One year later, Haeger is a lot closer to Chicago than he is to Bristol. Mastering his unpredictable flutterball, Haeger went 8-2 at Winston-Salem of the Carolina League, winning a promotion to Birmingham of the Southern League.

Haeger has won his first two starts in Birmingham, including a 16-4 decision at Carolina on June 27, when he worked seven innings and allowed just one run.

The timing couldn’t be better for Haeger, who will turn 23 in September and needed a big season to get on the White Sox’s radar.

If he keeps getting hitters out, Haeger could become Chicago’s first knuckleballer since Wilbur Wood was flummoxing batters in the early and mid 1970s.

And who could have forecast that a year ago?

Salvador Sanchez, OF, R/R

Sanchez is a very raw prospect filled with tools. At 6-6 he possesses good size and scouts expect him to develop power as his body fills out. In fact one scout compared his body type and skills to that of Juan Gonzalez. Obviously this was a premature label, but despite his struggles in Bristol, Sanchez showed scouts good to plus speed, a strong arm, and with time they feel he will hit for power. Intimidator fans could be seeing a star prospect in the making.

Sanchez was ranked the 19th best prospect in the White Sox farm system by FutureSox.com:

19. Salvador Sanchez, OF, 20, R/R

Sanchez is a much talked about and very talented five-tool prospect, but he’s yet meet those expectations outside of some flashes during a streaky season at Bristol.

He hit only .260 last year with 17 doubles, four home runs, and 14 stolen bases in 246 at-bats. The power isn’t bad considering it should continue to develop, and the number of steals is obviously very encouraging. Sanchez seems like he could be similar to the recently traded Chris Young. His average is below par but he brings speed and developing power to the table. Sanchez will need to draw more walks to live up to the full comparison of Chris Young, but the talent is there.
