Jim Fainter
I noticed that everyone's favorite "Young" prospect, Anthony Webster, is now turning it on after a slow start at Kannapolis. His average is now over .300 (.313) for the first time this year. If he is the real deal, we should move him up a notch soon. Daylon Holt is hitting a ton at Winston-Salem. I'd like to see him go back to Birmingham to make room for Webster. Move both of them up.
MurcieOne
Webster is still very raw, there is no question of his talent..... but the bottom line is that this is his first time playing full season league.... and he is to good to rush... let him take his time and work on gaining his experience... Holt I think should be in AA..... he can hit the f***ing ball and Birmingham is in dire need of some offense. I also think it's degrading to send Holt down after I think he was in AAA last year. Jim Fainter
Some players progress faster if they are given better competition. Webster might be that way. If he continues his hot hitting into mid-May, I would recommend promoting him to Winston-Salem. If he goes up the minor league ladder one level a year, then it's a six year run for him before he plays for the Sox. If Holt goes to Birmingham, someone has to fill that spot. Might as well be young Anthony.
Chisoxfn
Moving Webster up now would be a huge mistake. Were talking about a kid that is just 18 (Didn't look it up, but he's something like that) years old and still very raw. Let him establish himself in Winston Salem first and then when ready give him the jump up to Birmingham. You can't move a guy up based on a month of the season, unless they are at a much higher level or are repeating a level. Half way through, you can move him up to AA if he's still tearing the cover off the ball and he will be one of the youngest players there. Cerbaho-WG
As the main worshipper of Webster here, it would be a good thing to keep Anthony down at Kannapolis. He's only 19 or so, and has too much potential to be wasted on rushing him through the organization. He'd been hitting a lot of extra base hits lately, but his SLG % (.385) is a bit too low. His .400 OBP is a great sign, though.

Jim Fainter
I agree, Rex. If he does well, then we can realistically look for him to be in Chitown in 2004-2005.
Jim Fainter
Another guy they should move up the ladder is Ruddy Yan, second baseman for Winston-Salem. He's hitting .333, 16 steals, and he played at W-S last year. He could probably help Birmingham.

However, I'd like to see Honel make a few AA starts by the end of the year........ same goes for Wing... that kid looks niiice.
Jim Fainter
Another reason for sending Webster, Yan, and Honel up to Birmingham is that Rex would be scouting them for us and reporting to us via SoxNet.
Rex Hudler
Another reason for sending Webster, Yan, and Honel up to Birmingham is that Rex would be scouting them for us and reporting to us via SoxNet. I think Yan is the first move that should be made and it may happen sooner than we think (no inside info, just a hunch). Remember, Yan has already spent a year in high-A. Holt could come back, but I am not sure he is any better than the guys we have. I was at least half tongue-in-cheek about Webster. Sending him to Birmingham may be a bit quick on the draw, especially since he is considered a raw talent as it is. I think you will see Honel here later in the season, but I would be surprised if it is before the halfway point and am thinking more likely the last month of the season. Another thing to keep in mind, they won't strip W-S of talent if they are headed for the playoffs, at least not unless they want to lose another affiliate. Wing and Allen are also possibles toward the end of the season, depending on what happens here and in Charlotte. Things keep up with the big club and Backman may be the "prospect" that moves up the fastest. Then again, Nick Leyva is also a possibility. Mathew
I have gone over to the we need a need manager bandwagon, and I trust Rex Hudler's and HSC's opinions here very much I'm shocked. You've been bandwagon jumping all over the place lately cw. I still disagree with JM a lot, but I would no doubt disagree with Backman a lot too, that's what the game is all about. I can give JM this year and go from there myself, we have a winning record against the Twinkies for Pete's sakes.
cwsox
I'm shocked. You've been bandwagon jumping all over the place lately cw. I did the Daubach bandwagon only because some ignorant MLB poster was blasting JM for playing him. But last night I went to bed before the game was over, without even turning it on. The only other time I have done that was when Bevington was manager. I could agree to hang on to to JM if we got a new hitting coach. This weak offense is unacceptable. Too many players are hitting too poorly.

cwsox
Will Backman make this team hit though? who knows - its all a gamble - but a change might wake some people up
Jim Fainter
It's the "Wake Up Call" syndrome (WUCS). Happens all the time in pro sports when a talented team is playing s***ty. Too many players are too comfortable with JM. They need to be disturbed a little. JMO, I could be wrong.
Mathew
Then they hit for 2 weeks as the have woken up, and sit back again. As cw said it could work or could not. I think Backman's a winner, I just not convinced that JM isn't. 95 wins made me believe.
Guest JimH
Back on the Webster thing, he just turned 20. The thing is, I think the Sox want him to "gel" with some of the other kids playing in Kanny ... Gonzalez, Lopez, Brice, Bounds. If these guys are indeed the future, it makes sense to let that chemistry develop a little bit ... let them get settled in to a full season grind. That's one of the things these guys with the Twins have said ... their chemistry is so good because they came up together thru the minors. I'd leave Webster where he is for at least a couple of months. He'll inevitably hit some bumps in the road.
YASNY
YES I THINK HE WILL................ I'd like to know why you think so. Is not Backman the manager at Birmingham? And, from what I understand, that team would have trouble hitting their way out of a wet paper bag right now.
Grebeck Fan Club
Yan should move up, because the move from high-A to AA is one of the toughest and it's time to see if he's a real prospect. Webster should stay in low A, maybe get a taste of high-A later in the year.
Jim Fainter
What's the latest on Bounds? I think he was hurt early in the year, and I haven't seen his name anywhere until a recent post from JimH.
Guest JimH
Re: Brandon Bounds, he's not listed on the stats at all so he's either still hurt or they plan on starting his year at Bristol.
