Buster Olney just said that Jamie Moyer was traded to the Braves and the Astros, but he invoked his no-trade clause for both.  Didn't he say a while ago that he wanted to win something before he retired?  And wouldn't he have a much better chance at winning something on the Braves or Astros than he would on the Mariners, where he has no chance?

The M's have the $ & the core talent to be a contender for years to come.

They got rid of an albatros of contracts & I think they are learning fast that at Safeco they need to manufacture runs much more so than slug them out. I suspect they will look more to the guys who hit for average over the boppers in 2006. I don't think you can blame Moyer for wanting to stay & I don't think the M's do either.

Curious as to what the Twins would get. I'd think they'd be looking for some ML help and I know they want Soriano so it seems unlikely they would help another team get him.

Of course they did make that 3 way with the BoSox/Cubs last year and the Twins are owed a favor by the Cubs for that (IIRC the Twins actually didnt' get everything they could cause the deal was made right at the deadline and there was an error in it). Ryan let the deal go through anyway.

You realize that Moyer is going to be 43 soon, right? He's got, at most, 2 more years left in the majors. I guarantee you that the Mariners aren't in contention in either of those two years.

Rich Hill and another ML player from Cubs to Twins. Todd Walker to Texas along with Mays and Lohse, I think I heard.

That move would be counter productive for the cubs. Moving Todd Walker to the top of the order is one of the reasons the Cubs have been successful as of late.

So the Twins deal Mays and Loshe for Rich Hill and another major leaguer.

Cubs deal Todd Walker, Rich Hill and another MLer (goes to Twins) for Alf

Rangers deal Alfonso Soriano for Loshe, Mays, and Todd Walker

Sounds like a nice deal for the Rangers, they get two decent starters and a quality 2nd baseman for Alf. Cubs give up a lot but get a good player...don't see why the heck the Twins do that. Hill is a pretty good prospect, but they better have a way to get some other pitchers.

Ya, that doesn't make much sense to me, unless the Twins are packing it in with Hunter's injury which I highly doubt is the case.

Soriano or Todd Walker? Tough decision? NOT!

Don't the teach common sense at Stevenson?

I'd love to see Lohse and Mays pitch in Arlington. They'll be All Stars.

Even if its Hairston...Twins badly need some pop and they'd be dealing a good portion of their staff without getting any (at most Cubs give up someone like Hairston) so it makes no sense.

Who knows, maybe the Twins have another deal worked out. Thats the only thing I could possibly think of cause I think they'd be clearing up some payroll in that deal. Mays and Loshe make a combined 10 million.

Could they be a sleeper and go after Burnett and Lowell or something along those lines. It obviously frees up payroll to allow Terry Ryan to make another move.

One thing though, how the hell does a team in the thick of things deal 2 starters.

Obviously Soriano is a better player then Walker but the Cubs have been playing well since they moved Hairston and Walker to the top of the order because of the fact they now have decent obp guys ahead of dlee. If they trade for Soriano who hits 2nd for them??

The latest from Will Carroll of BP....

The Rangers aren't backing off their demand for Francisco Liriano, but with the need they have in the outfield, the Twins are looking to... wait, I literally just got a call. The Rangers have declined the last offer, which did include Liriano, according to a Minnesota source. The Twins asked the Rangers to include Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Mench as well. I'm shaky at best on this source. Adrian Gonzalez doesn't fit with Minnesota and would have had to be flipped quickly.

A little fall out from this past weekend:

There were no big deals before Sunday's trade deadline, but we may have seen the beginning of a swell feud. The Rockies were steaming when a three-way deal they thought they had made to acquire two minor-leaguers from the Red Sox came apart when Boston backed out. Colorado sent Eric Byrnes to the Orioles in exchange for Larry Bigbie, whom they had planned to send to Boston for catcher Kelly Shoppach and outfielder Adam Stern. "I will talk to the commissioner, believe me,'' Rockies owner Charles Monfort told the Denver Post. "If that's what it takes to be world champions, then people are right, we may never be one because we don't treat other organizations like that.'' The Red Sox blamed communication problems.

IThe Chicago Cubs today acquired minor league pitcher Justin Berg from the New York Yankees in exchange for outfielder Matt Lawton. In addition, the Cubs purchased the contract of infielder Scott McClain from Iowa (AAA).

Berg, 21, in his second professional season, as he was selected by the Yankees in the 43rd round of the 2003 draft. In 30 career games (10 starts), the right-hander has gone 9-4 with a 4.33 ERA.

This season, Berg is 6-2 with a 3.53 ERA in 15 games (nine starts). He has held opponents to a .226 average and allowed just 3 home runs in 58.2 innings of work.

Berg has found his greatest success in 2005 in the starting rotation, going 3-0 with a 2.72 ERA (12 ER/39.2 IP) and a .199 opponents batting average against.

Lawton, 33, was acquired from Pittsburgh July 31 in exchange for outfielder Jody Gerut. In 19 games since joining the Cubs, Lawton has batted .244 (19-78) with 2 doubles, 1 homer and 5 RBI.

McClain, 33, joins the Cubs after spending the entire season at Triple-A - where he hit .291 with 27 doubles, 30 homers and 93 RBI in 121 games. He had 30 multi-hit games and 24 multi-RBI games - and drove in a season-high 5 runs on June 20 at Nashville.

McClain last saw major league action in 1998, appearing in nine games for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He also spent four seasons (2001-2004) playing in Japan for the Seibu Lions.

McClain was a non-roster invitee to big league camp in 2004 and batted .348 with 6 homers and 16 RBI in 24 spring training games. He re-signed with the Cubs on February 8, 2005, as a minor league free agent.

In 1,364 career minor league games, McClain has batted .268 with 265 doubles, 203 homers and 794 RBI.

McClain will wear uniform #9.
