Yoda
1.) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory $55,380,000 2.) Wedding Crashers $32,225,000 3.) Fantastic Four $22,725,000 4.) War of the Worlds $15,000,000 5.) Batman Begins $5,620,000 A lethal one-two punch from a pair of debuting comedies led the North American box office to a busy weekend. Warner Bros. went after families with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while corporate cousin New Line connected with adults with the raunchy Wedding Crashers which together injected over $87M in new business into the marketplace to lead the box office to a healhty gain over last year. With four different films grossing $15M or more, some much needed depth returned to the charts.
southsider2k5
"Charlie" was excellent. No doubt in my mind it was way better than the original
RibbieRubarb
What a great movie "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" was... **SPOILERS** My Son adored it and he loves the first musical version. But I've been reading him the book for years, so he was thrilled to see the scenes and characters that were dropped from the orginal musical film. The Indian Prince and his Chocolate Palace melting around him. The Oompa Loompas singing Dahl's original lyrics, Veruca meeting her fate at the hands of Squirrells, not geese. The children leaving the factory and seeing the result of their experiences. The added stuff was wonderful too. The depth Johnny Depp and Tim Burton added to Willy Wonka and Charlie Bucket's relationship. Pure Magic!! This is NOT a remake. This is the FIRST adaptation of the book. The other was a hollywood musical. Fun, classic..but not true to the vision of the book. This will be a Family Classic for years to come. RibbieRubarb
QUOTE(Brian @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:23 AM) Well put. Except for the extra ending, but I was fine with it. The ending was organic with the rest of the film, that's why it worked. It completed the personal journeys of Willy and Charlie. I'm still laughing at the "Flags of the World" exhibit. CrimsonWeltall
Good, but Gene Wilder's Wonka >>>>>> Johnny Depp's
sox4lifeinPA
yeah, I agree with Crimson (for the first time in history) but I thought Depp's version was adequate (sp?) if not good.
aboz56
Hated the movie, saw it in IMAX. A few things which made it tough for me to like, considering I am a huge fan of the original. 1) Depp was horrible as Wonka. He came off more as a mysterious, creepy figure than anything else. This is not the way Wonka came off in Dahl's book or in the original movie. 2) The music was terrible. Instead of the Oompa Loompas tunes, they had songs for each kid after they made their exit out of the movie. You couldn't understand any of the lyrics either. No pure imagination or golden ticket, either. 3) I didn't like the same guy playing all of the Oompa Loompas. 4) No slugworth talked to all of the kids after they found the ticket and there was no giving back the gobstopper at the end. This was out of line with the way I remember the book. 5) No bubble drink scene, which was part of the book and original.

I guess I just liked seeing a different take on the whole thing, but I would add that the flow from each scene was ackward and I didn't like that willy wonka didn't sing at all. I thought the garden scene from the original was one of the best scenes from the movies and cinema all together.
