for Phil Nevin, I just read.  Sounds like an awful trade for the Padres.

If the Orioles are giving up pitching, even though it's s***ty Sidney Ponson, they must have something going on to get a starter. Maybe this is opening up for them to get Burnet or Schmidt or something? :huh

The (Orioles) going aftyer Schmidt form what I read in SI.com . Angelos was concerned about Burnetts arm troubles!

I wouldn't consider Marte for Wagner as swapping relievers, if you know what I mean.  However, I thought Wagner has said he might retire after this season.

I like what I've seen from Marte since he came back from the DL and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he'll return to where he was in previous seasons. That's not "Billy Wagner good" but still pretty good, and not worth the inclusion of BMac for the upgrade. Plus Marte's cheap and under contract for a few more years.

I'm fine with trading him to the Fish though, because Burnett would improve the rotation and Contreras could move to the bullpen, although not necessarily until the post-season. That way we improve both the rotation and bullpen, and I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to acquire a LOOGY for some mid-level prospects. It just seems like such a no-brainer.

I guess I'm one of the few who considers starting pitching much more valuable than relief pitching. The Marlins and Red Sox were each able to win the WS with only 2 relievers who had ERA's under 4.00 for the post-season.

Also, why would the Phillies give up Wagner now?  They're on a pretty good run, and have a solid chance at the NL Wild Card.  Not only that, but AJ Burnett looked awful at Philadelphia last week.  I can't see why the Phillies would want Burnett.

Philly has Urbina to handle the closer duties and have decent enough relievers (Fultz, Madson) to back him up. But their starting rotation, with Wolf gone for the season and Padilla ineffective, probably needs more help.

I do think he is as good as gone, even before tonight. Ozzie pulled a quick hook on him after one walk last night and was perfectly willing to replace him with Jenks, who is probably the wildest arm on the team. Methinks Marte is on the "showroom floor" whenever he is out there and they don't want to risk him laying an egg.
