daa84
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 12:10 PM) I don't think it would take that much to get Griffey. IF your willing to take on his contract, the Reds will unload him with open arms, imo. I've been saying for a while (not speaking in terms of the Sox) but Griffey would be a key player at the trade deadline and may just be the best guy to trade for (at least offensively speaking). Once again, I'm speaking in terms of baseball in general, not saying he'd be the best pickup for the Sox. Omar Vizquel and Billy Wagner would be the best the Sox could do, imo. A close 2nd would be Vizquel and Schmidt (if they could get them giving up Contreras and a few minor leaguers, I'd do it). Of course I don't think either of these would happen. id just about s*** myself if the sox get burnett spin him for wagner, and then find a way for that schmidt thing to work with a deal centered around contreras. JUGGERNAUT
Would you stop thinking of Griffey long term at CF? That's as realistic as Piazza playing C in the AL. Please look at this realistically. The $: There is no buyer out there (incl NYY) that is willing to not only pay for Griffey's remaining yrs on his contract but also the deferred $ the Reds owe him. So we can assume the Reds will pick up that part of the contract the Reds already owe him. That means a buyer for Griffey is picking up 3 yrs at $12.5M ($6M defer w/out interest until 2009 & payed out to 2025), & 1 option at $16.5M ($6M defer) & $4M buyout in 2009. So let's just simplify it down to a miminum cost for Griffey: The deferred $ equates to $18M/16yr or about $1.5M/yr w interest. So he will cost $22M/3yr + $1.5M/yr for 16 yrs thereafter. What that buys you is arguably the best combination of DH/OF sub of any team in this post-season this year & one of the best combination of 1B + DH/OF sub of any team in the AL over the next 3 yrs. All for a price that will be less than signing Konerko to a 4 yr deal. Let me repeat this: Griffey will NOT displace Rowand or any one in the OF. Griffey is not expected to be a starting OF in the near future. Those days are over. He has admitted as much himself. What that means for an AL team is the likelihood of Griffey remaining healthy more than doubles. I am confident that Griffey can play 1B as good as Koney can. The White Sox will have a full ST to groom him for the position. He is ideally suited for an Ozzie like team because Ozzie is not afraid to play a guy at more than one position. JUGGERNAUT
Immediately, Griffey replaces Thomas at DH. Timo is gone. When/if Thomas returns Gload is next to go. Thomas is not going to return in anything more than a platoon role at DH. With Griffey Everett assumes Timo's role as a 5th OFer bench player behind Griffey. JUGGERNAUT
I likewise want to add that Griffey would become the White Sox 2nd best defensive OFer. Just look at the numbers. Pods is nothing special as an OF & Griffey has more range than Dye. So I'm not afraid to play him in LF in place of Pods on days you want them both in the lineup. Nor am I afraid of playing him in RF in place fo Dye on days you want them both in the lineup. And please stop putting Everett on a pedastal. He came up with clutch hits in April, was a sad sack in May, contributed greatly with Frank in June, & has returned to being a sad sack in July. What does that spell? An inconsistent run producer. Sag's has him as 38th best bench player in the AL. B-38 Everett, Carl CHW B 4.61RPG, 32R 70H 14HR 56RBI 125TB 272AB Everett vs LHer: .325A/.500S. Everett vs RHer: .229A/.732OPS His numbers are deserving of that of a 5th OFer/3rd DH option.
RockRaines
QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 12:03 PM) Im all for Griff, move Rowand to right, and play Dye, Paulie, Carl in 2 of 3 positions at either 1st or DH. You can be all for him all you want, he is not coming to the sox. As soon as Dye is back, there are no spots for KGJ in our lineup.
nitetrain8601
Griffey could be had for a guy as small as Timo depending on how much the White Sox are willing to pick up. And whoever said Griffey is not as good as Rowand defensively is on something. He's still better than Rowand and is better than 90% of CF in the league defensively still. Offensively, Griffey would rake at the Cell. I would love to get him, but I'm starting to think that KW and Ozzie are overrating this "chemistry" thing. I know it's a factor, but replacing a guy like PK with Griffey would only help chemistry IMO.

You can make a case for Edmonds and Kotsay being on the same page as Rowand. Aside from that, there aren't any that are better than Rowand. I just posted something on that. He also had some nice things to say about the Sox splitting against the BoSawk. I actually think he was pretty right on. It doesn't matter to the BoSox as much as it does to Chicago. The Red Sox have won it all, they have that winning attitude and have been through the postseason, for the White Sox it matters more. They split the series but would of won the series had they played any defense in Buehrle's start. At the very least that tells you, that you can play with the defending champs. It's funny cause we just played like total s*** in two games and still split the series. I'll take it. We play decently in those two games we win atleast 3 of 4, maybe all 4. Beltran is pretty good, but not as good as Rowand. Vernon has the tools, but is lazy defensively. Rowand is that good, no joke. He gets as good of jumps as anyone in baseball and flat saves runs. He ocassionally will throw the ball to the wrong guy (ever OFer does) but he's flat out great out there.

I'd take Griffey, Beltran, Jones, Wells, Hunter, Kotsay, Edmonds, Jeremy Reed, and Mike Cameron before I sniff Rowand. And that's just guys at CF. He's the one player that may go ahead along with Torri and Andruw. And your wrong on the others. Griffey ain't even close, Beltran is solid (way over-rated though), Wells is meh, Kotsay/Edmonds/Reed are all very similar to Rowand (I'd put Reed a class below right now). YASNY
The Sox could probably trade Carl Everett straight up for Griffey. As for who's spot in the line up he takes, it's obviously Everett.
knightni
Cincy wouldn't have a place for Carl. He can't play a consistant OF, but when he does, it tends to be in LF. Unfortunately, Dunn is stuck in LF because he can't play 1b because Casey is there. Dunn is about equal to Carl in LF prowess, and I doubt that Cin wants to have Dunn and Everett in the same OF. knightni
This means that we would platoon Rowand and Dye if Griffey would come on...right? JUGGERNAUT
Okay, this whole deferred contract thing. Do you guys know how much he'll make a year in deferred cash? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If the White Sox only have to take on 3 yrs of deferred money it will cost the White Sox between $1.5-2M/yr from 2009 to 2025. If the White Sox have to take on all 8 yrs (01-08) it will cost the White Sox between $3.5-4M/yr from 2009 to 2025. Griffey Jr turns 36 this Nov. In a worse case scenario where the White Sox have to take on all the money there is the possibility Griffey Jr could enjoy his stay so much so that he renegotiates his last year for an extension. In that scenario your still securing his sevices through some of the years he's earning deferred money.
nitetrain8601
4 million isn't too bad as worst case scenario at all. Will it cost us a player? We have to see, but people act as if 10 million is deferred per each year through 2025. I'd certainly get him.
