I don't like them at all, and think Henley is an ego-maniac prick, but ya have to respect the hell out of them.

They defined the "Southern California Sound" for a decade, making them part of the progression that included the Ventures, Beach Boys, Byrds, Burrito Brothers, etc., so they are unquestionably of historic rock and roll relevance.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD

End of Story.  Had Van Zant not gone down in flames theyd have been huge.

Jimi Hendrix too.  AC/DC.

Jesus guys.

Jimi Hendrix, for all intents and purposes, was a solo artist. AC/DC was from Australia. So "Jesus" yourself.

AC / DC are from Aussieland?

Son of a b****, man. They seemed American to me, I never even bothered to check it out.

I'll give you Hendrix, but you chalk something up to Skynyrd. Free Bird is hte 2nd biggest hit of all time.

I guess that you've never heard Brian Johnson, Angus Young etc. talk then.

Aerosmith is #1

Kiss is #2

Metallica #3

Eagles #4

Beach Boys #5

The Hendrix that put Hendrix on the map, though, was a band, the Experience lineup with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. They were an order of magnitude bigger than Band of Gypsies or New Rising Sun or any of the post-Experience stuff Jimi did.

The Grateful dead has to get some play, and I am not even a fan. Thier following and constant touring was pretty unique until Phish ripped their vibe.... and of course when Jerry Garcia died. But they get a vote from me.

All members of Aerosmith should in fact be burned at the stake.

A pink stake.

...with frilly, lacy scarves all around it....

Mid-70s Aerosmith = great

Rehab 80s Aerosmith = not as good as the 70s, but oh well, let 'em get back the money they blew on coke

90s Aerosmith & beyond = not good at all

....in my humble opinion, of course.....always gotta throw that in there.... :)

I can't believe 42 replies and y'all missed one of the largest selling bands of all time.

REO Speedwagon

If you are judging by hit after hit, there has to be some love for Cronin and the boys.

REO had been on a nonstop touring and recording schedule since 1971. There have been no farewell tours and no reunion tours. "We started out playing local bars in Champaign, Illinois and worked our way up from there" says Doughty. "We did it the old fashioned way and as a result we have a following which is still growing to this day."

30+ years with hits spanning the 70, 80, 90, 2000.

I'd also toss in there the Fleetwood Mac, Eagles (Greatest Hits All-Time #1 Selling Album), Aerosmith, Van Halen, Pearl Jam, and Journey.

What has America contributed to the history of rock and roll? The ability to create sales and make the cash register ring. Forget Indie, forget complex, forget meaning, look at what American music does best, gets people to open their wallets and pluck down cold hard cash.

If we start talkin' quality and other "artistic values" you would have to add The Ramones and Velvet Undergroud to the discussion.

Cheap Trick should get a little nod. Maybe not HUGE, but they definitley have their place in history.

Agree with Critic about Aerosmith. They were brilliant, and then not so, and now just TERRIBLE. Steven Tyler should not be allowed to speak again until he stops that strange rhyme/rap crap he does in every interview. Plus after seeing Be Cool, please, nobody ever give him an acting part ever again!!!

Joe Perry though is still one of the coolest looking cats in all of music.

I've decided that the most underratd lead singer in rock and roll history is Gary Puckett. Damn, that guy could sing.

Cheap Trick had a great, but short, run. Loved more in Japan than Jersey.

I helped set up a show for REO a few years back, and they were some of the nicest guys you could ever deal with. I wasn't nearly as big of a fan of them before I met them. I sure can't say that for all of the groups we help set up, there were some really assholes. Some of them were really surprising to me.

They are always my pick for most under rated band of all time. In between the TOP 40, sells a lot of record, hits and some good, well crafted, tunes.

I also appreciate there lack of drama, angst, break ups to make ups, etc.

Ridin' the Storm Out, played really, really, loud, with the windows down and some good buddies is almost spiritual.

A personal fave

Golden country your face is so red

With all of your money your poor can be fed

You strut around and you flirt with disaster

Never really carin’ just what comes after

Well your blacks are dyin’ but your back is still turned

And your freaks are cryin’ but your back is still turned

You better stop your hidin or your country will burn

The time has come for you my friend

To all this ugliness we must put an end

Before we leave we must make a stand

Mortgage people you crawl to your homes

Your security lies in your bed of white foam

You act concerned but then why turn away

When a lady was raped on your doorstep today

Well your blacks are cryin’ but your back is still turned

And your freaks are dyin’ but your back is still turned

You better stop your hidin or your country will burn

The time has come for you my friend

To all this ugliness we must put an end

Before we leave we must make a stand, oh yeah......
