The Bullpen

Ever since the rumors started before the all-star break the bullpen seems to be falling apart. Is that coincidence or jitters? How many people would want to be traded off the team with the best record? I can't think of one person on this team who would want that right now.

So I think it's more jitters than anything else & one the 31st passes the bullpen will become a strength again.

I still like Hermanson, Marte, Politte, Cotts, Jenks. I'd rather swap Vizc with Villone.

A few of them might be getting a bit tired considering they've worked a ton the passed week. Jenks, thankfully looks strong and will probably be able to contribute in key situations much more often. Viz is just bad, and Cliff today made a bad pitch and got beat by a great hitter.

Vizcaino has been good for the past 2 months. I don't know why when bullpen problems occur, the first sign points to him. Politte was literally all over the place today. He did not make one mistake today, he made multiple mistakes today. He had wild pitches, couldn't find the k zone and when he did, he served up a meatball.

I don't like the fact that Ozzie took out Garland after only 88 pitches. I really don't like the fact that Ozzie took out Cotts after 6 pitches I think it was. He wasted his bullpen early on.

I'm nervous about a tired pitching staff headed into a series highlighted by the Cuban Pitching Crisis. Hopefully they go deep into games because they damn need to

As old and tired as that saying is when referring to Contreras and Hernandez, you actually gave me quite the chuckle.

Well done.

If Kenny doesn't do ANYTHING at the deadline, some eyebrows will be raised...some higher than others--think Anthrax.

Did you not watch the game? The 1st pitch was a meatball. Guess what! Sweeney foueld it off. The pitch was high and in, way out of 99% of hitters' strikezones. Sweeney got good wood on the ball and kept it fair. Props to the hitter, don't diss the pitcher...JMO.

There is a wierd bias thing going. He has the quick hook for garland who wasnt tired after 88 pitches, but lets his nieces husband start the 9th in a game last week after throwing over a 100 pitches and having a long rain delay.

Ozzie is a matchup guy. He lives & dies by the Pitcher vs Batter thing. I think it's ok to consider it but it shouldn't rule over game situations & performance.

Yeah I am sure the matchups favored us starting Freddy in the 9th in that game.

Cotts shouldn't be used as a situational lefty. Considering how much better he is against righties, it's foolish to use him for one batter. Also, Cotts is one of the few pitchers we have who doesn't look all his stuff if he has to go out to the mound for a 2nd inning.

I dont agree with what Ozzie is doing with Cotts. Lefties are hitting better against him than righties. So I dont know why he puts him in for one guy, which happens to be a lefty and after he walks him he pulls him from the game. This will kill his confidence and take him off his rhythm. The whole lefty-left / righty-righty is overrated unless you are a proven specialist.

Marte looks shaken by the trade talks. He looks nervous and is walking way too many lefties.

Vizcaino is looking better and has lowered his era to 3.86 from a 6.86. Jenks looks impressive but still needs some work before I can make an assessment on how effective he can be.

Overall pretty good but i wouldnt mind another arm in there.

The guy puts on so many runners. He's not very good at all, and putting so many runners on will eventually catch up with him again.

Well then, there must have been trade talks about Marte for a long time. He's looked nervous for as long as I can remember about him. He's the guy that'll be gone before the deadline, it seems. Hawk and DJ seem to hate the guy. Ozzie is cursing whenever he's in the game. Nobody likes him.

In the last 2 games the whole team is acting like they lost their best friend. lol

Some numbers to look at when considering trades:

CWS Apr 05 .255/.691 vs Opponents .229/.652

CWS May 05 .254/.754 vs Opponents .252/.717

CWS Jun 05 .271/.781 vs Opponents .241/.687

CWS Jul 05 .270/.758 vs Opponents .276/.782

The hitting has really picked up, but the pitching has gone south.

June HOT-RP: Politte, Cotts, S. Takatsu

June HOT-SP: Buehrle, Garcia, Garland,

June COLD-RP: Vizc, Marte, Hermy, Walker

June COLD-SP: Contra, El Duque, BMac

Record: 18-7. L's by SP 4

Jul HOT-RP: Vizc,

Jul HOT-SP: Garland,

Jul COLD-RP: Politte, Cotts, S. Takatsu Vizc, Marte, Hermy, Walker

Jul COLD-SP: Buehrle, Garcia, Garland, Contra, El Duque, BMac

Record: 12-10. L's by SP 8

I have greater faith in the starters to pick it up than I do the pen.

The highest trade priority must be the bullpen.

I know this analysis was supposed to mean something as to why we need more help in the bullpen but you lost me....

It appears that our pitching, which has been our strength has been cold in July thus leading to our struggles. However, our hitting as been atrocious for most of the year so I think we really could use some help there. We may have a ton of steals but we also lead the majors in caught stealing with 45. We may be getting timely hitting to eek out a win but that's because our pitching has kept us close. Like last year when the runs scored would be 14, 0, 1, 2, 9, 1, 2, 8, 0, 11 in consecutive games, this years its 7, 0, 2, 3, 4, 11, 1, 2, 1, 3, 2, 4 but we are winning a lot of those games where we score less than 4.

I think we need a lefty bat via trade, Crede to keep coming on, Pierzynski and Konerko to pick it up, Rowand to heat up with more power and Uribe to return to utility man (either Lugo or Vizquel in his place). And upgrade pitching as necessary.

The numbers don't support what you're saying. Yes we struggled offensively in April

& May. You can see that in terms of the BA & OPS above. But look at Jun & Jul. The team is hitting now.

The pitching has gone seriously cold in July. Both the bullpen & starters have struggled but some of the starter's woes are inflated by the relief guys not holding down the fort when the starter leaves.

We need help in the bullpen much more than another bat in the lineup.

If our fielder's ever decide to catch the ball these are useless points. One game agaist BOS there were 3 unearned runs and one game against KC there were 3 unearned runs. We win both of those and no one is screaming about the bullpen.
