Burnett to be dealt for wagner?

Wagner = FA at the end of season.

Marte = signed for God knows how long.

Marlins = no money to resign Wagner if they traded within their own division to get him, which they wouldn't.

OK, that seems reasonable. The only problem I have is with the Marlins not wanting to trade Burnett within their own division. Everything being equal wouldn't the Marlins rather want Wagner than Marte and McCarthy? Essentially they would be helping out a division team anyway because they would have to know that the Sox have interest in sending Burnett to Philly to get Wagner. Could that be something that is holding this whole thing up?

Damaso Marte is signed through next season for 2.5M and he has a team option for both '07 and '08 each worth 3M. So he's protected through the next 3 seasons.

I knew it was for a while, just didn't know exactly how many years.

At this point, I just want someone in baseball to make a fairly big trade, just so it'll get the ball rolling. I can't remember this time of year ever being so dead.

No.  The Marlins are not going to trade withing their own division and risk helping an opponent while they still have a small chance of making the playoffs.

Ok, but that is what I am saying. I think you are misunderstanding me and I am having trouble making it clear.

By trading Burnett to either the White Sox or Red Sox they may essentially be helping a team in their own division out. Because they know that both the White Sox and Red Sox are interested in moving Burnett to Philly in order to acquire Wagner.

Since the Marlins know that the White Sox or Red Sox are interested in doing that, and they don't want that to happen, is that something that could be holding up a trade of Burnett to either the White Sox or Red Sox?

If this is the case then I'd rather have Burnett, simply because I believe that our starting pitching needs more help than our bullpen. That's JMO though and I can see why people would want Wagner instead.

So I take it you have no problem with Vizcaino giving up 4 hits while only recording one out against the second worst team in the AL?

And I have no idea where you get the fact that our bullpen is better than our rotation. Number wise, we look like this...

Buehrle - 11-4, 2.96 ERA, 1.14 WHIP

Garcia - 10-4, 3.76 ERA, 1.25 WHIP

Garland - 15-4, 3.09 ERA, 1.10 WHIP

Contreras - 6-6, 4.36 ERA(10 QS, 4 decent starts), 1.36 WHIP

Duque - 7-3, 4.78 ERA, 1.57 WHIP

The top 3 are very solid, and the last 2 are very good numbers from a 4 and 5 starter(even if Contreras is getting paid like a #2)

Bullpen wise, it is similar...however, the back end of the pen has been shaky at best...

Hermanson - 1.85 ERA, 1.18 WHIP

Politte - 1.71 ERA, 0.81 WHIP

Cotts - 2.36 ERA, 1.05 WHIP

Marte - 2.90 ERA, 1.65 WHIP

Vizcaino - 4.01 ERA, 1.56 WHIP

Jenks - 4.32 ERA, 2.04 WHIP(I do not bold this as he is mainly a mopup guy just getting the team through the game)

Those last 3 have been far from dependable whatsoever this year, with Marte having no contrl whatsoever, and Vizcaino just having the s*** hit out of him all year. By making this trade, you are getting rid of the worst WHIP in your bullpen and adding a 0.97 WHIP(and a guy who hasn't had a WHIP above 1.00 since 2001). The rotation really cannot be upgraded much with Burnett, because his 3.48 ERA will undoubtedly increase in the AL, and his 1.26 ERA is nothing to write home about...that puts him, at best, as our 4th starter in the rotation. This means he will make maybe 3 starts in the playoffs, if the Sox were to not sweep in the ALDS. Meanwhile, Wagner could probably be used in half the games in the playoffs, thus increasing his value an incredible amount. By having Wagner, you do not worry about ever running into a Marte/Vizcaino/Jenks situation where they have to be brought into a crucial situation. Politte-Cotts are excellent middle relievers, Hermanson is a hell of a good setup man, and Wagner is one of the most dominating closers in the majors. You make that trade, and your pen is almost unhittable, and catastrophe's, like yesterday's game, don't happen, in all likelyhood.

I guess it could be. When someone first mentioned something like that a few weeks ago, that's what I said might happen.

Keep in mind that Vizcaino had pitched in his 4th straight game when he did that. It isn't surprising to me that he wasn't sharp.
