NHL Draft Thread

Recommended Posts

Ah -- the one time a year Hawks fans get to be excited about.

I like Brule a lot. Sounds like a hard-nosed forward who can put the puck in the net. But he might not fall. Basically, if any of Brule/Johnson/Kopitar/Ryan happen to fall to seven, I hope the Hawks grab 'em, even Johnson, the defenseman -- 'cause you can't pass on a defenseman so good, regardless of the Hawks situation. But I doubt that'll happen anyways. So, if everything plays out like it's supposed to, I hope the Hawks take Skille -- he's going to be attending Wisconsin.

Here's a Top Ten report from Redline. Link.

Jack Skille is a pure power winger who plays a tremendously advanced two-way game. Skille arrived on the scene three years ago as a guy with great speed and a big shot, but has rounded his game off to become a complete player who can beat you with a big goal, a big pass, a big hit, or even a big shot block. He's an absolute powerhouse in the corners who plays bigger than his size and barrels his way recklessly to the net with a great burst.

what is your take on this kid

Anze Kopitar is the top European this year at any position. He's the first top-flight prospect ever produced by Slovenia, and quite possibly the best pure sniper in this year's crop. He's deadly from the circles in and wants the puck on his stick at crunch time. With a big-time shot and explosive, game-breaking abilities, he'll be off the board early.

The biggest and strongest power winger this year is Guillaume Latendresse, who is not only huge at 6-2/220 pounds, but also freakishly strong. He's impossible to move off the puck, and few even attempt to drive him out of the crease. Though not at all dirty, Latendresse often injures opposing defensemen with the sheer force of his crushing hits in the corners and along the walls. He's a heavy-footed skater, but has soft, quick hands and a nice release on his shot

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 10:55 AM)
How does the NHL draft even work?  Is it like the NFL where it goes according to record, or is it like the NBA?

more like the NBA... worst teams get higher chance at the number one.... so you cant throw games.

without a season, everyone had a chance at the first but the worst teams got a higher chance to get better picks.

Ah, gotcha.

I don't pay much attention to the NHL, and only a little bit to college when I go to some games. I was wondering why the Hawks didn't have the first pick since they were like the worst team last season, so I figured it had to be like the NBA. Thanks.

Jack Skille

07/09/2005 - (u18) Tournament wrap-up: truly possesses considerable NHL potential as an elite-line forward .. wreaked havoc among the Slovak defense in the USA tournament opener with his ability to make use of his size .. the sized forward could out-power the vast majority of his opponents and when he decided to crash the net, the opposing defensemen were sometimes just bouncing off him .. a solid factor in the match-up against Finland .. worked hard in the game against the Czech Republic and showed solid hitting and speed .. USA 'Player of the game' against the Czech Republic .. wasn't as flashy or quick as the likes of Kessel and Mueller, but created lots of space for his linemates with his power and generated numerous quality offensive chances during each game .. is blessed with considerable skills and really dominated some of his shifts in the two playoff contests to crown a delightful performance at the Under-18 WJC .. ranked second on Team USA in shots (24 shots). Scouting: a good skater for a player of his size .. utilizes his powerful stride .. impressive balance and lower-body strength .. good agility for a big man .. shows an explosive first-step which enables him to out-skate opposition .. a solid puckhandler who covers the puck well .. can play the puck in traffic smoothly .. is blessed with solid smarts and understanding of the developing plays .. emerges as a solid playmaker .. aware of his linemates .. an imaginative passer .. decent in-close finishing skills .. fires a heavy wrist and snap shot .. solid accurate slap shot .. handles heavy traffic well thanks to his frame and is at his best when crashing the net .. likes to battle opponents physically .. often positions himself in front of the opposing slot and looks for rebounds .. returns back to the defensive zone .. okay at closing the opposing passing lanes .. a right-shooting forward.

03/21/2005 - Seems to deliver his best efforts when the stakes are highest. Though he's been pedestrian at times this season with the NTDP, there was nothing boring about his effort at the recent U-18 Five Nations Tournament in Sweden. He stepped up with a captivating performance, leading the tournie in goals (tied with Phil Kessel), points and plus-minus (4-5-3-8, plus-7). "His energy level in Sweden was terrific," according to a scout. "He elevated his intensity away from the puck and was driving through traffic with determination. I love his persistence when he gets in scoring areas. He really gets an adrenalin boost if he has a chance to get a shot in. And he's a lethal threat high in the slot, where he seems to gravitate waiting for a chance to unload his rocket one-timer. His best weapon is a bone-rattling shot that is also extremely accurate. Still, there are concerns. Inconsistency has been a problem as he can look disinterested at times, and a tad impatient when things aren't going his way. But, when he's firing on all pistons, he's a Bill Guerin type power forward in the making."

11/16/2004 - Showed excellent agility at top speed and a quick first couple of steps .. displayed terrific hockey sense, making intelligent plays all night .. a resourceful player .. when nothing is immediately open, he will lean on his puckhandling abilities, patiently waiting for something to appear .. delivers hard, pinpoint-accurate passes .. also boasts a booming shot which he can unload at full speed .. showed impressive accuracy on one particular rush, letting rip a probing shot from just inside the blueline .. his impressive size/speed combo makes him extremely tough to contain, and he shows no fear driving to the net .. a well-rounded player, he gave as good an effort defensively as he did in the offensive zone .. relentless and never quits on play .. handles the puck exceptionally well in traffic .. not always going at full tempo, at times he can appear not overly quick or agile .. however this is deceiving, as he gives a much different look when he turns the jets on .. led tournament in scoring with seven points (4-3-4-7).

09/30/2004 - Top speed is well above average .. does not play at full tempo at most times, instead intelligently picking his way through traffic, waiting for the play to develop .. when he puts on the jets, he can maneuver around guys pretty quickly, but is not extremely agile nor quick .. well-balanced with good size and strength .. drives relentlessly t the net and fights for space well along the boards and near the crease .. very intelligent all-around, showing nice patience with the puck .. displayed savvy passing skills, finding a teammate through traffic .. wrist shot is very hard and accurate with a quick release .. showed consistent work ethic .. came back hard to his own zone and constantly worked for the puck along the boards .. cerebral and deceptive, waiting for an opportune time to steal the puck from an opponent.

04/22/2004 - Displayed excellent patience and confidence with puck .. very fluent skater; displayed excellent top speed .. made a beautiful play; skating forwards, he made the transition to backwards and, as he skated into the slot, waited for the goalie to overcommit, firing a laser-accurate shot into the top corner, showing impressive patience and smarts .. excellent shot accuracy .. fully willing to use his frame to gain position .. consistent hitter who enjoys throwing his weight around when the opportunity arises.
