Adam G
A proposed three-team deal involving the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Devil Rays "hit a roadblock" Friday night, according to a baseball official familiar with the discussions, and now appears unlikely to happen at all. The deal proposed would have sent unhappy Boston slugger Manny Ramirez and Tampa Bay closer Danys Baez to the Mets, with the Red Sox acquiring outfielder/designated hitter Aubrey Huff and outfielder Mike Cameron, and the Devil Rays getting two prospects apiece from the Mets and Red Sox. If this is true and ultimately ends up happening, the Mets would be getting Manny Ramirez and Danys Baez for Mike Cameron and two prospects. That's a suprisingly low price, considering some of us on here have been saying it would take a couple current starters and a couple high level prospects to get him. If you take Tampa and Baez out of the equation, it seems as if we could get Manny for a starter (Rowand?) and a midlevel prospect because of his ginormous contract. Discuss. knightni
The Mets are getting a bigger discount because they aren't in the American League.
Adam G
QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 08:46 AM) The Mets are getting a bigger discount because they aren't in the American League. I find it a little bit ironic that Manny wants to be traded because of the lack of off the field privacy in Boston, so he's going to New York. He's probably more open going to New York since he's from there.

Nope, it's been said the roadblock is the Red Sox simply wanting more when they were ready to complete the deal.

The problem is this deal won't happen with the Mets just giving up that little. The road block is supposedly that the Red Sox won't do it with Looper being included. So basically for Manny and two prospects the Red Sox want Huff, Cameron and Looper. That's three above average major league players. That is a lot, and I don't blame them. This is probably why it has to be a three team deal, because any team wanting Manny would be a competitior, and would have to give up too much to remain competative. Ie, the Cubs would have to give up roughly Burnitz, Walker, and Dempster to get Manny, and eat his whole contract.

YASNY
The Cincinnati Reds are missing a golden opportunity to rid themselves of Griffey's contract. They could make a deal with Boston centered on Griffey for Manny, adding whatever it took to make Boston go for it. Then, they could have stepped into Boston's place in the big 3 way deal involving the Mets and DRays.

The 2 prospects are great prospects, and they along with Shoppach and Sanchez from the Red Sox are needed to pry Huff and Baez from the Devil Rays. Honestly, I think this deal would be good for every team involved but the Red Sox. The Mets get a top 5 bat and a good RP, and the DRays get 4 great prospects. The only team that loses is the Red Sox, unless they view replacing Mueller as priority #1.
