bjm676
Yankees sign left-handed pitcher Alan Embree 07/30/2005 12:26 PM ET The New York Yankees announced today that they have signed free agent left-handed pitcher Alan Embree to a Major-League contract. To make room for Embree on their 25-man roster, the Yankees designated left-handed pitcher Buddy Groom for assignment. The 35-year old Embree was 1-4 with one save and a 7.65 ERA in 43 appearances with the Boston Red Sox in 2005 (37.2IP, 42H, 33R, 32ER, 11BB, 30K). He was designated for assignment on July 19 before being given his unconditional release on July 29. He has pitched in 136 games in his last two full seasons and in 2004 he appeared in 71 games for the Red Sox, second-most in franchise history. He has pitched in at least 60 games in each of the last six seasons and has held left-handed batters to a .236 batting average (203-for-860) in his career. In 30 career postseason appearances, Embree is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA and has held opposing hitters to a .219 batting average (16-for-73). He has pitched in two World Series and was a member of the Red Sox' World Championship squad in 2004. Originally selected by the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round of the 1989 First-Year Player Draft, Embree owns a career record of 29-32 with an ERA of 4.62 across parts of 12 Major League seasons with seven different teams (Cleveland 1992, 1995-96; Atlanta Braves, 1997-98; Arizona Diamondbacks, 1998; San Francisco Giants 1999-2001; Chicago White Sox, 2001; San Diego Padres, 2002 and Boston 2002-05). Groom, 40, was 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 24 games with the Yankees this season (25.2IP, 32H, 14R, 14ER, 7BB, 13K). He was signed by the Yankees to a one-year minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training on February 7, 2005 and began the season with Triple-A Columbus. The Yankees purchased his contract on April 19 after RHP Tanyon Sturtze was placed on the disabled list on April 18.

WSFAN35
I don't understand why they dumped Groom for Embree... I thought they were trying to get into the playoffs.
