U.S. Magistrate Andrew Rodovich accepted the admission of guilt from 31-year-old James Allen Nichols to four counts of manufacturing child pornography. The court made public Friday a plea agreement between Nichols and the U.S. Attorney's office in which Nichols agrees he will likely receive a sentence of 262 months when he is sentenced Nov. 3 by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Miller in South Bend. Nichols admitted to the allegations filed by the government that he coerced an 8-year-old girl into sexually explicit conduct, photographed her and downloaded the images on to his computer. The investigation began about five years ago when Highland police stopped the girl as she was riding her bicycle through a busy intersection to escape Nichols. Secret Service Agent Michael Bush searched Nichols' house in 2001 and found a digital camera with images of naked underage girls and another 464 images of child pornography on Nichols' computer, court records said. Investigators of a suspicious fire April 23, 2004, at KompuDoc, a computer business Nichols operated in Schererville, turned up more child pornography evidence, court documents said. Nichols admits the pornography was his property, but said he didn't molest any other children. He agrees that he will become a registered sex offender after he is released from prison.
