Commit a $365 million fraud...

This is one of those stories that I don't know if I should describe it as disgusting, sickening, pathetic, or just totally unsurprising.

Ameriquest Mortgage company is about to agree to a $365 million settlement with all 50 states in this country for totally defrauding customers nationwide, through all sorts of shady dealings described at that link.

Their owner throughout all this is a billionaire named Roland Arnall. Over the last few years, Mr. Arnall has been one of President Bush's biggest contributors, giving about $600,000 to various pro-Bush causes and groups in the time.

As thanks for either the payments to pro-Bush functions or the fraud (I'm not sure which Bush would reward - perhaps both) Mr. Arnall has been named U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands. This is the 8th ambassadorship given out by Mr. Bush to $100,000+ donors since the start of this year.

Here's a nice little description from one of those links.

When billionaire car dealers or manufacturers pay for ambassadorships, at least they pay with money earned by selling something of value. How much of Mr. Arnall's money came from cheating hard-working families, families who were trying to scratch their way out of poverty and into a home, families who turned to refinancing when dad lost a job or mom got sick, and families who answered an advertisement that promised to help them lower their monthly payments--only to get cheated?

If Mr. Arnall paid $600,000 for an ambassadorship, why not make that part of the settlement? Why not let some of the people who lost their homes, who paid hidden charges and inflated prices, and who stripped their savings and borrowed from friends in order to keep making those monthly payments to Ameriquest get a piece of the action? Why not let them take a turn as Ambassador-for-a-Day? After all, when ambassadorships are for sale, why shouldn't the people who really put up the money get their chance to have tea with the Queen of the Netherlands?

Linda Carruth Davis, Hager's former wife of 32 years, claimed in an interview with The Nation magazine that Hager repeatedly "sodomized her without consent" during their marriage. Davis also alleged that on at least one occasion Hager paid her $2,000 for oral sex, and that Hager had videotaped and photographed them having sex.
