Banks get it wrong.  A lot.  If you don't reconcile your statements, you're asking to get ripped off.

I once cashed a $200 check at the drive-thru and counted my money in the car (which came up $180). I immediately notified the teller, and she told me to come inside and talk to the manager. He said I'd have to wait until they balanced the drawer to find out if there was a mistake. Of course, the drawer balanced, and I was out $20. Damn you to hell LaSalle Bank. Damn you to hell.

I now bank at Bank One. :D

i've never used my checkbook, or balanced it.

Debit card all the way.  Online banking rules

I got a checkbook and debit card right before i went to college. Didn't use my debit card much at the start til i knew how clutch it was.

I wrote checks for tuition and books the first year.

The past 2 years, living in an apartment, i write checks for rent, electricity, and water.

Otherwise the debit card rules all.

I also have never balanced a check book in my life, i just look at everything online to make sure it matches up. Online banking is clutch.

Only for my 2 credit card bills. And yes, they are White Sox checks!

The debit card scares the crap out of me, I try to resist using it, I intentionally messed up my ATM code and reset it so I couldn't take money out (okay, I just forgot one number and messed it up, but it sounds like a better story if I say I did it intentionally)

100% checks, b****es!!!

And for the sake of hammerhead and ss2k5's busy busy busy lives :D :P , I write everything out on the check before I even GET to the checkout line, and write the total in the ledger when I get home.

I don't know why I haven't gone debit card yet - I think maybe it's too easy to use the debit card, and I need some inconvenience to keep my impulse buying in check!

and Mike, you should get Wi-Fi so you could post while you wait for those slow check-writers to finish up their transactions....

"Write?" I print out many checks each month, sign them, and mail them or hand them to employees. Some of my payroll is delivered in cash to help those employees who have decided that a checking account is far too advanced for them.

I use checks when I have employees picking stuff up at stores, easier than giving them my debit card and tracking them down to get it back.

I use checks at one large supplier to take advantage of some float. I know he only deposits twice a week. I keep some interest money for a few more days.

In those far away and long ago days in college, I wrote checks hoping for a couple days float before my paycheck appeared. And I know everyone here has at least once or twice when they were uncertain of their balance, and didn't want to have the card denied. :D

I very rarely write out a check. I have a few bills (including one credit card that I hate) that can't be paid online. Mostly gas, electric, water...

Is it weird that I can walk into a store and pay a credit card bill with my debit card? There is a Sears store near me that accepts Discover payments. So I'll go in, they swipe my Discover card, then they swipe my debit card. I've always thought that was kinda crazy...

I dont have a credit card or a debit card. I use my checkbook everywhere. If your store doesnt except checks, you wont get my business. lol

I like paying cash for little things like sodas at the gas station or a quick trip to Taco Bell. Write checks for grocies and clothes. And use online payments for my bills

WHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY??

Explain this madness to me?? Why write instead of swipe?? When something is created in this world to make things more efficient, why neglect it?

Can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's simply personal preference.

Besides, I haven't seen any evidence that any payment method other than cash is SO MUCH faster that it can't be ignored. The same f***ups that can't process a check efficiently also f*** up debit or credit card purchases.

And like I said earlier, when I step to the register, I already have all the pertinent information written on my check. All I have to write is the amount, and some places print the amount through their registers. I don't waste anyone's precious extra 30 seconds, which will probably be wasted playing some retarded game on their cell phone anyway.
