Balta1701
Several sources are reporting that the Orioles have fired manager Lee Mazzilli after the collapse of the last month or two by that team. He's reportedly been replaced by one of the Orioles bench coaches. Probably can't hurt to try ify ou're in their shoes, I guess.
Balta1701
ESPN Article The Baltimore Orioles fired manager Lee Mazzilli on Thursday with the team mired in an eight-game losing streak and still reeling from Rafael Palmeiro's positive drug test. The Orioles have made bench coach Sam Perlozzo the interim manager for the remainder of the season. The announcement was made just two hours before Baltimore's game at Anaheim. Coming into Thursday, the Orioles were 51-56 and 10½ games behind first-place Boston in the AL East. Mazzilli compiled a 129-140 record in one and a half seasons with the Orioles, having taking over as manager on Nov. 7, 2003. Perlozzo, 54, is in his 10th season with the Orioles, spending his first five as third base coach before becoming bench coach in 2001. Perlozzo is in his 19th season as a major-league coach, having also served on the staffs of the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners. He was a manager in the Mets system from 1982 to 1986 and compiled a 364-263 record, winning three league championships and never having a losing record. soxman352000
This is a horrible move by the O's front office. i hope Lee catches on somewhere else
GoodAsGould
the fact that they contended for most of the season should be a plus for them, they just need to lose the roider and add an OF and a starter in the off-season. Should have money losing Palmiero and Sosa.
knightni
Mazzilli is the Flip Saunders of baseball managers. He got a raw deal.
Rowand44
QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 5, 2005 -> 04:07 AM) He got a raw deal. A victim of his own success, imo.
Yoda
It’s funny how an organization can praise their own manager when his team is having success, but all of a sudden fire him because the team is struggling to win. The situation that the O’s are in is not pretty, but fingers should not have been pointed at Mazzilli. His starting rotation can’t even go out there for at least 5 innings and Lee had no option but to go to the bullpen at an early time of the game. Plus, it doesn’t help when the offense isn’t clicking.
