retro1983hat
Most of us probably agree Hawk was 10X better when Pacoriek was with him. I have heard rumors but nothing specific as to why Wimpy left the Sox booth. Some of theories are: 1. Wimpy was getting a lot of publicity and was becoming a fan favorite and Hawk's ego was just too big to deal with that. 2. Reinsdorf wanted Tom to study harder and work more on his pregame preparation and he refused. 3. Spend more time with the family closer to home. 4. He and Hawk had a big blowout and in the end, the Sox would take Harrelson's side. Just wondering. I loved the two of them together and the booth hasn't been the same since. knightni
He was having emotional issues. His brothers and he were molested by their priest when they were children and it all came to a head when the Boston priest scandal came out. He went onto Detroit for awhile, but I haven't seen him around lately.

Kalapse
QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 04:51 PM) Tom quit because of ignorant comments made by Hawk regarding Tom's sexual abuse as a child. QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 05:00 PM) To a fellow member of the media no less. I think this answers the question quite well.

WilliamTell
I never knew that either, but that makes me mad to hear about it. It's a sick world.
retro1983hat
I was unaware of that. I had heard rumors about the items I listed above, but didn't know about that. I did hear from some people that ran into Wimpy once that he said Hawk was the biggest A-hole he ever met in baseball. FWIW.
mrzo2733
Hearing this really pisses me off. I can't remember too much about Wimpy, but I loved that guy. He was awesome. At the time, if I had a choice, I would have given Hawk his walking papers. Just when I started accepting Hawk, you hear something like this and think that Hawk can go f*** himself. Dick Allen
Wimpy didn't go public with the abuse story until 2002. His last season with the Sox was 1999, so if Hawk said anything to him it was because of personal private conversations. I don't know how those would become knowledge of anyone other than those 2. Wimpy, at least at the time he left said it was because he was asked to do more preparation for the games, and he said if you don't like how he did the games then he would leave. I take his word for it. Any other story obviously could be true, but why speculate?
Be Good
I remember Wimpy on WGN, he was awesome. Did Hawk or Wimpy come up with the "you can put it on the board" phrase?

I heard wimpy left because of therory #1, but then when Kalapse posted the thing about the abuse and what hawk said it makes hawk look like a complete a-hole. Guest JimH
There are all kinds of stories and theories out there. People here would be well served to not accept any one theory as the sole cause.
MurcieOne
while i trust the people mentioned with the rumors.... you have to take everything with a grain of salt... this is of course just second hand info.
kapkomet
Why does this question keep coming up about once a month? If it was personal, say that. That's all that needs to be said. Damn gossip. Edited August 9, 2005 by kapkomet
whitesoxin'
Maybe he just didn't feel like doing it anymore? DJ is starting to grow on me, so my wound from Wimpy leaving is healed. It was 6 years ago, we have to move on.
