Chisoxfn
I want a closer with attitude. It takes that special frame of mind to go out and get through all those pressure situations. I will stick to my guns and back Koch. I think he's gonna pull through and be an awesome closer for the SOX for a long time.

I think he's gonna pull through and be an awesome closer for the SOX for a long time. the closer role is so overrated...the best closer on this team is also the most quiet...damaso marte....even if koch was throwing 100 mph marte is still a better choice... i really like foulked and would have loved it if he could have stayed here...i actually liked him most in his 99 role where he pitched like 120 innings a 2 -3 inning set up man..with marte as a closer foulke could have returned to that role...foulke was a team player...if we had a GM that worked to make this a real team that could have happened as long as foulke was compenstaed fairly... but if he had to be traded i could understand...but not for another closer unless we are talking on the order of billy wagner...we should have packaged up foulke and lee for some speed or left handed power...handed the closer role over to marte or gordon...we'd be much better off...this isnt hindsight either..i said this when the trade was made... paying a closer big bucks is probably the biggest waste of money in baseball....you want a closer...find a starter that has two good pitches and starts off games great but runs into troble in the middle innings (gagne) ..there is your closer...if need be..danny wright would make an excellent closer... you pay the big bucks for only the very best..like hoffman who closes games out at an 89% clip...koch closes them out at about 84%...might not sound like a big difference but that 5% is huge...100 pitchers in baseball can close out games at an 84% success rate... Chisoxfn
It is in hindsight because at that time Gordon wasn't on the team so if Marte is gone they would of had no proven set up man.
baggio202
no it wasnt hindsight because there was a bunc h of set up men out there as free agents besides gordon...reed and remlinger are two right off the top of my head....besides.. williams has made three trades like this...trading guys in the same position for similiar play ers...siro -wells , well fogg lowe - ritchie after those two disasters he didnt learn and made the foulke - koch trade...
