greasywheels121
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...cs-home-utility McCarver likes Sox's chances Teddy Greenstein ON SPORTS MEDIA AND COLLEGES Tim McCarver can't stop raving about the White Sox. But he never could make it as a Sox fan. Too little angst. McCarver, who will call the Yankees-Sox game at 12:20 p.m. Saturday for Fox, has raved about the South Siders all season. Their recent slide has done nothing to make him quiver. "I don't think there's reason for concern because they're such a good team," McCarver said. "Their pitching and defense is solid, and that's such a dangerous combination in the playoffs. "If the White Sox have a problem right now, any team in baseball would like to have it. Don't think the Yankees wouldn't love to have that problem." McCarver doesn't accept the notion that the Sox would be vulnerable in the playoffs against Oakland or Boston, against whom they're a combined 4-11. "That doesn't matter," he said. "It's the playoffs, not the regular season. Things are not as predictable. There have been many examples of that through the years." Here are McCarver's two favorites: In 1983 the Dodgers won 11 of 12 regular-season games against the Phillies. But Philadelphia, largely because of two dominant pitching performances by Steve Carlton, lost only once to Los Angeles in the National League Championship Series. Five years later, the Mets owned the Dodgers in the regular season, going 10-1. But Orel Hershiser was all but unhittable in Game 7 of the 1988 NLCS, and the Dodgers prevailed over the Mets. McCarver spent the week in Chicago after working last Saturday's Cardinals-Cubs game at Wrigley Field. That gave him time to check out the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit at the Art Institute and hit Charlie Trotter's restaurant. It also allowed him to read about the Ken Griffey Jr. trade rumors. Just like Toulouse-Lautrec's drawings, McCarver said the 2005 Sox should not be messed with. "Where would you put Junior?" McCarver asked. "He can't play defense like [Aaron] Rowand. And how long would you have to pay him? That would be an expensive deal. "Why would you need to do something like that anyway, to make the Sox a more feared team in the postseason? What has Junior done in the postseason to support that [theory]? Not to say he's not a Hall of Famer and a great player. But you'd be putting undue pressure on Junior to be a savior for a team that could win 105 games. I don't get it." Grand slam A year ago they went nose-to-nose in the back of a baseball press box before Hawk Harrelson thought better of slugging Jay Mariotti. But it's no stretch to say the feud is far from over. Harrelson laced into Mariotti during Monday night's White Sox telecast, calling the Sun-Times columnist and ESPN personality a "sick, sick guy." Harrelson said Mariotti must have incriminating pictures of somebody to keep his job. "You lose those," Harrelson said, "and he gone!" Harrelson was fired up by a Mariotti column in which he called Ozzie Guillen a "social fool" and a "loose-lipped disaster" and wrote that "Hypocrite is now spelled O-Z-Z-I-E" after Guillen criticized San Francisco talk-show host Larry Krueger for his insensitive comments about the Giants' Latin players. Harrelson said: "He calls Ozzie a hypocrite. Has there ever been a bigger hypocrite … you can put Mariotti's picture right beside it. They call him the lead columnist at the Sun-Times, but he is so far behind Rick Telander, he's not even second. "I understand he was in New York. All he had to do [at Yankee Stadium] was take the elevator down, make two right turns and a left turn to get to our clubhouse—and of course he didn't." Harrelson also said Mariotti's obsession with Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is "like that Glenn Close character in 'Fatal Attraction.'" Mariotti replied: "I'm kind of bored by this story. Why don't we bring back Jimmy Piersall to do the games? That's all I have to say."

3 BeWareTheNewSox 5
I think he makes some good points, especially about this recent stretch. Although I want Griffey and don't agree with the "Where would he play?", that is a lot of money to pay for an injury prone player who would be at the mercy at Ozzie's Timolovin lineups, would we even be able to resign anyone after next year? And no chance Cincy would eat the money. Just go for Mike Lowell or something

He hasn't missed a game all year due to injury, is it possible that he's healthy? Hate to label a guy injury prone for the rest of his career because he was hurt for a few years. AirScott
read this quote from McCarver: "'Where would you put Junior?" McCarver asked. "He can't play defense like [Aaron] Rowand. And how long would you have to pay him? That would be an expensive deal.'" what do you think the odds are he called Aaron Rowand "Eric Rowand" and they added the "[Aaron]" so he doesn't look like a fool, like when he calls Bronson Arroyo "Brandon"? Milkman delivers
If a person ever asked me to my face where Griffey would play as a reason to not get him, I would hit them in the face with a steel chair ala Ric Flair. Yes, that last part rhymed and now you'll remember. Griffey would be, without a doubt, hands down, no ifs, ands or buts about it, the single best offensive weapon on this team. I don't even care what his range factor or ZR or any other garbage stat that someone like Juggs can make up, err...find is. He could play SS for all I care, even if he is left-handed. Colorado Sox Fan
mccarver has probably seen the sox play about twice this year. he doesn't know s*** about this team. I'm glad he thinks they will do well. Now, the losing streak will be over and we're going to the world series. Please, the national media knows and cares nothing about the sox.
