Greg Hibbard
Okay, so Twins put in a claim for Soriano just to block, right? What's to keep any team from just claiming any player and then NOT working out a deal just to block?
Kalapse
That's exactly what they do, all the time. The downside is you don't know if there's going to be a trade, the Twins assumed Soriano was going to be traded so they put out a claim. When you claim a player to block a trade there are some down sides: 1.) If you claim a player with a big contract simply to block a trade you could be stuck with that players entire contract and no use for him (ie: Randy Myers, Jose Canseco) 2.) You could piss a couple of teams off by claiming their players for no reason. This leads to bad relationships with other GMs which is something you don't want. Harry Chappas
Doesn't it cost like $25K to claim a player?
Steff
QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Aug 25, 2005 -> 03:58 PM) Doesn't it cost like $25K to claim a player? $50K, IIRC
Harry Chappas
QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 25, 2005 -> 02:59 PM) $50K, IIRC Now think if you claim 10 ($500K) players when the wire is flooded. This is why you put your whole team out there. I know the wire conversation is well overdone here but I never thought of this rationale.
