wow, the yanks just keep piling the s*** on top of itself.

 

I would guess this means they have absolutely no interest in getting Griffey. i still thought they might hold things up, if by some masterful grace of God the Sox were to try to work something out.

 

Cubs send Lawton to Yankees

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Matt Lawton from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, then plugged him into the starting lineup against the Kansas City Royals.

 

Manager Joe Torre slotted Lawton in right field, batting eighth, and used regular right fielder Gary Sheffield as the designated hitter.

 

In exchange for Lawton, the Yankees sent minor league pitcher Justin Berg to the Cubs. Berg, 21, was 6-1 with a 3.07 ERA at Class A Staten Island.

 

Torre said the addition of the 33-year-old Lawton gives him more lineup options.

 

"He allows us to do some things we couldn't do before," Torre said. "He's a talented player who gives us more depth. We've been light on the bench.

 

"I told Matt 'I can't make you any promises, but you're going to get your share of at-bats,"' the manager said.

 

Lawton batted .268 with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs over 120 games this season with Chicago and Pittsburgh.

 

"I talked to him last night and this is the first time he's been in a playoff situation," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "I just told him to go enjoy it."

 

Lawton has played for five teams in parts of 11 major league seasons with a career batting average of .269, a .369 on-base percentage and 164 stolen bases.

 

"He can steal a base and he has a little pop," Yankees GM Brian Cashman said. "He can do a number of different things from day to day."

 

To make room for Lawton on the 25-man roster, the Yankees optioned right-handed pitcher Scott Proctor to Triple-A Columbus. Proctor was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 games with New York.

yah this was already posted in ATH to let you know but i think its a good trade for the yankees. Cubs finally waiving the white flag.

So in the end, the Cubs turned Jason DuBois, a guy they essentially wanted to just dump, into a very solid leadoff hitter, setting themselves up to make a run. After that run did not materialize, they then traded Lawton for a 21 year old starter in A who has put up very solid numbers this year.

 

That is not bad trading right there

Yeah it's a good trade for the Yanks. The Reds have tied the Cubs for 4th. It'd be awesome to see the Cubs finish 5th after they were 2nd in the division for a long time.

I can see why some might like the trade, it just baffles me that the market for a player of Matt Lawton's caliber is so low.

I disagree. Dubois is a big time power prospect, and the Cubs ran him off cause he struggled in the field. With his power at Wrigley, he would have hit 30 homers a year if given the chance to start 140 games.
