Hospitals struggled to evacuate critically ill patients who were dying for lack of oxygen, insulin or intravenous fluids. But when some hospitals try to airlift patients, Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesan said, “there are people just taking potshots at police and at helicopters, telling them, ‘You better come get my family.”’

I've been trying to figure out why anyone could be so evil as to fire on an aid helicopter. What screwed up thinking. :headshake

Grandma I got some food, a single MRE for all 7 of them. :crying I just can't read anymore.

These are people who have waded through filth, see dead people floating/covered/in front of their eyes. These are people who have been herded into the Superdome, then to the convention center only to be left outside. These are people who have had a hard time getting food and water. I'm certainly not saying that taking pot shots at a helicopter is justified, but some of them probably aren't thinking straight.

There are counselors in HOuston that are saying people didn't' want to go into the Astrodome because of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Theydidn't want to feel trapped, they didn't want to smell that horrific smell. Again, I don't condone looting or shooting or any of that general maelstrom. But, I'm not surprised its happening and would like to think that most of the people there are peace loving but want to get the eff out.

So lets take some guns and shoot at the people helping us. That helps out the relief effort.

Put down the guns, stop looting or trying to take people hostage and it will only help the situation out. But to just say oh well, its the self preservation or whatever is a bit of a reach. We are human because of our capability for emotions and morals.

I guess they are hoping that someone will take them to safety at gunpoint? Dumb

Quick question:

Was there any logic given for why snipers were reportedly shooting at helicopters transporting hospital patients and others?

I only caught some of that briefly in the morning but had to hurry out.

In case this wasn't answered (haven't read all of the last 2 pages)

They are trying to force them to come help them.

I swear this is becoming one of those bad Hollywood movies about a meteor hitting Earth or the earth freezing over.

Get this: Huge oil spill from reserve tanks spotted on the Miss. river downstream from New Orleans.

Yep. 2 leaks from a source holding millions of barrels. Unreal.

Dear James,

Imagine surviving a terrible storm like Katrina and then having nowhere to go home. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross are scrambling to find shelter for the displaced. At least 80,000 people are competing for area shelters, and countless more are in motels, cars, or wherever they can stay out of the elements. Our fellow Americans need help and they need somewhere to go.

Yesterday, Moveon.org Civic Action launched an emergency project to help hurricane victims in desperate need of a place to stay. Today, the johnkerry.com community is joining in this vitally important neighbor-helping-neighbor effort.

http://www.hurricanehousing.org

Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance (about 300 miles) of the affected areas in the Southeast, especially New Orleans.

Many members of our community have already generously responded to the call for emergency donations to the American Red Cross and other charities working on the ground to help people whose lives have been torn apart. Now, we have still another way to help.

Please forward this message to anyone you know in the region who might be able to help.

Tens of thousands of people whose lives and homes have been devastated now face the daunting question of where to go next -- and we can reach out to them.

We are joining this emergency national housing drive to connect empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to wait out the storm.

If you can offer help, the process is simple:

* You can sign up to become a host by posting a description of whatever housing you have available, along with contact information. You can change or remove your offer at any time.

* Hurricane victims, local and national relief organizations, friends and relatives can search the site for housing. Many shelters actually already have Internet access, but folks without 'net access can still make use of the site through case workers and family members.

* Hurricane victims or relief agencies will contact hosts and together decide if it's a good match and make the necessary travel arrangements. The host's address is not released until a particular match is agreed on.

If hosting doesn't work for you, please consider donating to the Red Cross to help with the enormous tasks of rescue and recovery. You can give online at:

Donate to the Red Cross

This is a time for America to come together. And today, two of the largest and most active online communities in the nation -- Moveon.org Civil Action and johnkerry.com -- are working side-by-side to help in any way we can. There are thousands of families who have just lost everything and need a place to stay dry. Let's do what we can to help.

Thanks for being there for families in urgent need of your immediate help. Please keep the people of the Gulf Coast in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

Subject: Vacation is Over... an open letter from Michael Moore to

George W. Bush

Reply-To: [email protected]

Friday, September 2nd, 2005

Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane

Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be

airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military

choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears

parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could

really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do

like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to

begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of

Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then

but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there

were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this

storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody

tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know

how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to

and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying

to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps.

Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane

was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you

specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New

Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them

that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there

weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you

had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING

DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I

was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the

clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of

the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and

stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there

done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to

use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out.

Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this

would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter

and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all

their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a

hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado

that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30

percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had

no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean,

it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving

white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race

has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army

helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and

the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore

www.MichaelMoore.com

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch.

She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now

driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way.

Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st.

He might be one of the first big name to have mentioned race, but don't think that there aren't a lot of other people who are thinking the exact same thing.

I really dislike it when someone with an obvious extreme political agenda actually has some decent ammunition to fire. He does do a nice job of listing what happened.

It just doesn't seem fair to blame Bush this much for the problem. But much like Bilandic had his snow storm, Bush has this. I now have a better understanding of those 3rd world relief efforts and how a small number of citizens make things worse for the majority.

It's also the smarmy way in which he brings his points about. Seriously, are you more apt to listen to somebody making good points to you and actually speaking to you, or somebody who is mocking you and making fun of you the way a junior high school dork would do? Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Bush does have the crappy stuff he does just to piss off Moore than much more. Lord knows if I were Bush I would make for damn sure I was burning down trees and burning oil and people of all other races expect for "white" in effigy in Moores front yard.
