GoodAsGould
Nah Furcal would be in a "latin environment" and if anything id think play better with us next year. But as of right now im just worrying about this season and hopefully post-season b4 the off-season. Although I do agree that from the looks of it B-Mac is going to be a starter next year which would make you think one of Contreras/Duque are gone... and really wouldnt mind losing either although if I had to choose one it would be Contreras. sayitaintso
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 09:05 PM) I wouldn't say the only HR guy, but I understand what your saying. Were going to hit close to 180 HR this year, which is still very solid. But Uribe and Joe have become such big holes in the lineup, and in an order that is already VERY streaky, we need a consistant hitter like Furcal lower in the order, or have him bat 2nd, with Gooch moving down in the order. Either way you slice it, its helps the lineup out, alot. But just thinking if we didn't resign him, the next HR "big" threat would be JD. Steve9347
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 07:01 PM) Isnt AJ a UFA? Can someone find me a link to his status?? With the $$$ thing, like I have said earlier in threads, NO ONE in Sox management knew they were going to have 20+ sellouts this year. Who knows how many games we will for the playoffs(if we get there )and I would have to expect a little increase in ticket sales. Moreover, if the Sox were to get bumped out in the 1st round pretty easy, which could happen very easily, I am truly confident in Ownership and KW that they would try to put us over the top for 2006 after a very dissipointing 2005 season(if we got knocked out 1st round.) dude, I'm pretty sure AJ signed for two years, and we should just lock him up after this year. YASNY
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 30, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) AJ just has a deal for this year. Yes, but we will have control of him. He's arbitration eligble.
daa84
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Aug 29, 2005 -> 08:48 PM) Furcal > Konerko. Not sure if it will play out where we get Raffy but you gotta figure its a one or the other situation. Here's a question and I don't even know if he's a free agent and people here seem to hate Darin Erstad but would you rather have Konerko/Uribe or Furcal/Erstad? If we got Furcal and Erstad we will have gone from having no leadoff hitter before this year to having about 4 which is kind of funny. i actually happen to think erstad solid. just overpaid right now. man if we got erstad would rob neyer realyl hate us or what

DBAHO
QUOTE(YASNY @ Aug 31, 2005 -> 03:26 AM) Yes, but we will have control of him. He's arbitration eligble. Which is why it's probably in the Sox's best interests to get a long - term deal done, the same with Garland.

Agreed. The direction this franchise is heading in is very similar to where Minnesota went. You do not want to build your entire team around power...Texas has proven for years upon years that doing that does not work, and we proved that to ourselves from 01-04 that you are too inconsistent offensively to win. As of right now, we are overly dependant upon the homer(which is why a game like last night is so nice to see), and our horrific August proved that point very well. You get rid of Konerko, and that is getting rid of some of the reliance on home runs. You can bring in a 30-40 homer guy too, but the first qualification should undoubtedly be the fact that he hits for average and gets on base. The more versatile players you bring in offensively, the better. Bring in guys that walk, bring in guys that can steal bases, bring in guys that are singles hitters, bring in doubles-triples hitters, bring in home run guys, bring in guys that do it all well/good enough...why the hell not. The more versatile your offensive attack, the more consistent your offense.
farmteam
There's a difference between relying on Power and having a homerun threat. The best combination, IMO, is to have a mostly average/speed lineup with a couple of power guys. Not having a 30-HR guy in a lineup can hurt. And on the power note, other than Konerko, who are some of the biggest power bats up for Free Agency this offseason?

As far as power is concerned(speaking home runs here), Konerko is undoubtedly the best available. 2005-2006 MLB Free Agents
AngelasDaddy0427
I honestly wouldn't mind taking a chance on Nomar next year... He could come cheap... give him an incentive laden contract... Low risk high reward type move... He would come a heck of alot cheaper then Furcal, would sign a one year deal, and gives Uribe a year in the super sub type role he thrived in... Of course you also need to find a new 1B, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to play one of our kids from the minors... Also for the person who said they'd rather keep Orlando then Jose for next year... HAVE YOU EVEN WATCHED ANY SOX BASEBALL THIS YEAR!!!! I'd sure as heck rather keep the one who hasn't spend so much time on the DL...

WilliamTell
I just don't see this happening but the Sox will probably try to make an offer. "IF" this were to happen, I'd love having Podsednik, Furcal, and Iguchi as the top 3 in our batting lineup. Iguchi is the player I like to see in the 3rd hole. He doesn't need to always hit the home runs but more importantly he'll have the batting average.
