1549 Posted May 10, 2003 Share Posted May 10, 2003 I am not sure if anybody has mentioned this yet, but there is a segment of "Money Ball" the book about Billy Beane in this weeks Sports Illustrated. Just by reading that segment it is easy to tell that Billy Beane is a genius. A theme in that book is breaking away from the old game of listening to the scouts and basing personel movements on raw talent. When the A's director of scouting drafted a high school pitcher with a 95 mph fastball in the first round of the 2001 draft Beane threw a chair through a wall. Later that scouting director was fired, because Beane hates drafting guys out of highschool. Look at the guys he has drafted and put in that rotation, and you can tell that Beane is the best GM out there. Williams is just a piss poor GM in comparison. One thing that I know for certain is that, when KW was hired, all Sox fans wanted him to do well. He hasn't. I remember years and years ago, a baseball executive was interviewed and asked why more Blacks have not been hired for senior positions, and he said it might be because they would be very difficult to fire.
