LVSoxFan
I cannot take this anymore. This was a problem even in the first half when we were White Hot--I don't think I ever recall a team leaving more people on base than us. Second half it's just been ridiculous--even in the victories of late you're seeing bases loaded/1 or no outs and nobody gets in. Last night no doubt it is what killed us--sure, Garland looked iffy (again) and Inge's two homers didn't help, but OMG with guys at 1st and 3rd and... nada? Then the most painful of all: bases loaded and Dye... strikes out. You could feel the wind go out of me, The Hawkeroo and the entire viewing audience after that strikeout--because then it became a matter of waiting to see how we'd blow it. A scoreless 9th and somehow you just knew that something was going to happen to Politte--when that guy homered it was almost expected. I realize I'm stating the obvious, but is there any sort of scientific explanation as to why we strand so many? Is that a mental thing? Or is it that we just suck in that department--no explanation? Point being, if that's what's been doing us in all season (think of all the 1-run and low-scoring games), how do you correct something like that? BTW let's not forget: all three runs last night came from homers.
fathom
The players are pressing in RISP situations over the last few weeks. And as much as jphat might want you to believe, our hitters aren't even coming close to getting the big hit in the situations you mentioned. A ton of strikeouts or weak pop ups. southsider17
And I believe we've lead the league in BA/RISP for the previous 2 or 3 years . . . . by alot!
Balta1701
I took a look at those numbers last night...they were truly fascinating. Our batting average this year is .260. Our batting average with RISP this year is .261. We're doing no better or worse with RISP than we are with the bases clear. The interesting part comes when you compare our numbers with those of other teams. Right now, we're 13th in runs scored, right behind the Angels. But we're 26th in runs scored with runners in scoring position. We're just terrible at it. A higher proportion of our runs are coming with no one on 2nd or 3rd than almost any other team in the league. Take a look at the Angels...the team that has been nearly our duplicate in run production all year. They hit .270 as a team. But you want to know something amazing? They hit .296 with RISP. They lead the league in that number. That's how they've been able to score as many runs as us with far fewer home runs. Our production with RISP is pathetic. You're supposed to get better with RISP, not stay the same.
